Steering Column Support Structure May Crack
If the steering column loosens from the mounting structure, steering control can become affected, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2015-2021 Peterbilt 320 and 520 vehicles. The steering column support structure may crack or break in certain right-hand, stand-up drive models.
Remedy
PACCAR will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the 520 models right hand stand-pp steering column structure and replace it if cracks are present, as well as add additional support brackets to the new (if replaced) or existing structure, free of charge. Additionally, for the 520 models, dealers will install a large gusset with triangulating support for the column bracket, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 30, 2021. Owners may contact Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220. PACCAR’s number for this recall is 21PBA.

1. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list.
2. If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review SIR for “Complete” or “In Process” next to the 21PBA campaign code prior to performing this repair.
3. Follow the procedures below to complete the inspection, replace the steering column support if damaged, and install the additional steering support brackets. Even if the steering column support is not replaced, all chassis on the chassis list will receive the additional support brackets.

Dear Peterbilt Customer,
You are receiving this notice in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Peterbilt Motors Company has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model 320/520
Right Hand Stand-Up (RHSU) vehicles manufactured between June 26, 2014 and November 13, 2020. The Steering column
support structure may crack or break. Cracks may develop in the formed steel tube as a result of forces applied to the bracket
from pulling on the steering wheel or using the steering wheel as a grab handle.
The repair procedure and parts are NOT currently available. Peterbilt is required to notify customers of the existence of the
identified safety defect. You will be notified by mail when the repair procedure and parts become available.

The steering column support may crack or break.
When Peterbilt has developed the repair procedure, your dealer will inspect for cracks in the
structure. If necessary, replace the RHSU steering column structure. Additional support
brackets will be added even if no cracks are present.
TAKE NO ACTION AT THIS TIME. You will receive a letter notifying you when your vehicle is
eligible for repair.
Peterbilt has initiated this recall to remedy the RHSU steering column issue at no cost to you when parts become available.

Federal Law
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or
noncompliance has been corrected.
Warranty
There is no time or mileage limit for this recall. Peterbilt will pay for parts at dealer net plus applicable mark up
and labor:
• 0.80 hours to inspect the steering column support for damage and add the additional support brackets.
File quick claim 21 PBA.
• 0.80 hours to inspect steering column support for damage, replace the steering column support and
add the additional support brackets.
o A clear picture of the crack in the steering column support is required for a claim to be
processed.
o File a long form claim referencing 21 PBA.
• File an additional claim for extraordinary circumstances, referencing 21 PBA. A quick claim or long form
claim for standard labor must be filed first.
• File the claim within 14 days in accordance with Warranty Policy.
• Direct Fleets and Dealer Sponsored Fleets (DSF) may not use quick claims when submitting for repairs
on chassis related to this bulletin but must submit a long form specifying part numbers, quantities, and
pricing for parts used in the repair. Submittal of a Quick Claim for repairs made by the Fleet will be
denied as pricing is incorrect on quick claims.
Take-Off Parts Disposition: Destroy the take-off parts 30 days after the claim has been paid.
