The recalled products differ from other products that were not included in the recall because, during the specified production period, an incorrect torque specification may have been applied to the bolts which connect the driveshaft to the electronic parking brake. The recall population includes twenty (20) SA01 vehicles as potentially involved vehicles. Production Dates : FEB 21, 2022 – NOV 04, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : During the specified production period, the torque rating specification applied to the bolts connecting the electronic parking brake rotor to the driveshaft was too low. As a result, there is a risk that the driveshaft may separate from the vehicle. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In the event of driveshaft separation, customers may experience loss of motive power while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : The torque rating applied to the bolts connecting the electronic parking brake rotor to the driveshaft was misidentified due to an oversight in the engineering process. Address : 3550 Tyburn St. Los Angeles California 90065 Country : United States Chronology : On February 9, 2023, Xos engineering initiated an investigation into reports of drive shaft separations involving the subject vehicles. A review of service records indicated that there had been four reports involving three vehicles (one owner reported a second occurrence on the same vehicle). On February 15, 2023 the engineering team concluded that the torque specification applied to the bolts connecting the driveshaft to the electronic park brake was too low for the application and identified the proper torque specification. On February 24, 2023, the topic was presented to Xos’s Product Safety Committee. Based upon the information presented, the Product Safety Committee decided to initiate a recall to address this condition. To date, there have been four reports between October 13, 2022 and February 8, 2023 related to this issue, with no reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The affected bolts and related hardware on the affected vehicles will be replaced at no cost to customers. All of the subject vehicles remain under the manufacturer’s warranty. Therefore, pursuant to 49 CFR 577.11(e), Xos requests an exemption from the reimbursement plan requirements. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The recall remedy component can be distinguished from the recalled component because the remedy component will be installed at the correct torque specification. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Vehicles shipped after February 13, 2023 include the correct torque rating specification on the subject component. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Customers and Dealers will be notified of the pending voluntary recall campaign beginning in March 2023. The bolts connecting the electronic parking brake rotor to the driveshaft may have been improperly tightened. Loose bolts may allow the driveshaft to separate, causing a loss of drive power and increasing the risk of crash. Xos and authorized Xos Dealers will replace the bolts and related hardware, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed to customers by Xos the week of March 28, 2023. This recall applies to the following VINs in your inventory: Please be reminded that under 49 U.S.C. § 30112(a)(3), it is illegal for a manufacturer to sell, offer for sale, import, or introduce or deliver into interstate commerce, a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment that contains a safety defect once the manufacturer has notified NHTSA about that safety defect.
