Missing Supports for Fresh Water Tank

A dislodged tank may fall to the ground while in transit and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Palomino Solaire 320TSBH travel trailers. These vehicles may be missing the rearward and forward supports for the freshwater tank, which may cause the tank to become dislodged.

 

Remedy

Dealers will install rearward and forward supports for the freshwater tank, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 21, 2023. Owners may contact Forest River Customer Service at 1-269-432-3271. Forest River’s number for this recall is 400-1605.

Disconnect the vehicles’ battery Positive and Negative, disconnect any House battery(s) Positive and Negative, if equipped with a generator ensure it is off and lastly, ensure the vehicle is disconnected from shore power. Block any tires/wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Failure to do so may result in electrocution, fire or other personal injury, property damage and/or death.

 

STEP 1: UNFASTEN THE FIRST EIGHT (8’) FEET OF UNDERBELLY MATERIAL, BEGINNING AT THE FRONT AND WORKING TOWARDS THE REAR ON THE CURBSIDE AND ROADSIDE. TAKE CARE TO NOT RIP OR TEAR. ROLL THE MATERIAL INTO ITSELF AS YOU WORK REARWARD;

STEP 2: LOCATE THE FRESH WATER TANK, ROUGHLY BETWEEN FOURTY (40”) TO FOURTY SIX (46”) INCHES;

  • DO NOT REMOVE THE CURRENTLY INSTALLED TWO (2) FLOATING CROSS-MEMBERS – LEAVE THEM INSTALLED.

STEP 3: INSTALL ONE OF THE FLOATING CROSS-MEMBERS FROM THE PARTS KIT UNDER THE TANK, ENSURE THIS CROSS-MEMBER IS FLUSH AGAINST THE WELDED IN CROSS-MEMBER. USE TWO SELF DRILLING LAGS PER SIDE ON THIS FLOATING CROSSMEMBER. SEE FIGURE 1;

  • PUSH FRESH WATER HOLDING TANK REARWARDS UNTIL IT CONTACTS THE REAR WELDED IN CROSS-MEMBER AND SITS ON TOP OF THE NEWLY INSTALLED FLOATING CROSS-MEMBER;

 

INSTALL FLOATING CROSS-MEMBER UNDER FRESH TANK AND FLUSH AGAINST WELDED IN CROSS-MEMBER

 

STEP 4: LOCATE THE FRONT OF THE FRESH WATER HOLDING TANK AND INSTALL THE SECOND FLOATING CROSS-MEMBER;

  • CAPTURE THE FRESH WATER TANK WITH THE FLOATING CROSS-MEMBER, THE BOTTOM LEG OF THE ANGLE SHOULD BE UNDER THE FRESH WATER HOLDING TANK, HOLDING THE TANK UP. THE VERTICAL LEG OF THE ANGLE SHOULD BE FLUSH AGAINST THE FORWARD FACE OF THE FRESH WATER HOLDING TANK. SEE FIGURE 2;

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This notice is also sent in accordance with the requirements of the United States’ National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Forest River has decided that a defect, which relates to the motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2020-2023 Palomino SolAire 320TSBH travel trailer recreational vehicles. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.

 

WHAT IS THE DEFECT/NONCOMPLIANCE?

The rearward and forward support for the fresh water tank may be missing.

 

EVALUATION OF THE RISK TO THE VEHICLE AND OPERATOR(S) RELATED TO THE RECALL.

A tank dislodged while under towing conditions may increase the risk of a crash.

 

WHAT IS FOREST RIVER AND OUR DEALERSHIPS GOING TO DO?

Forest River is notifying dealerships of the recall. You may have the recall corrected at any Forest River dealership. However, it is preferable if you have your selling dealership perform the remedy. Forest River completely covers your cost for the remedy; you will not receive any bill of sale for anything covered under the above recall number.

 

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Please contact your dealer immediately and request a service appointment to schedule the free remedy. A rearward and forward support for the fresh water tank will be installed. The vehicle Owner is responsible for arranging to have the work completed. Please state you have been notified by Forest River of having a recall in process for your vehicle and provide the recall number for the dealership. It is also helpful to the dealership to have a copy of this letter when you take your vehicle in for the recall remedy.

HOW LONG WILL THE REMEDY PROCESS TAKE?

The estimated time of repair is 2.0 hours. However, the dealership may need to keep your vehicle or schedule an appointment with you for a later date to fit into their regular service schedule.

 

WHAT IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR REPAIRS TO YOUR VEHICLE FOR THIS PARTICULAR CONDITION?

If you have already paid for a repair that is within the scope of this defect under recall, you still need to have this recall inspected and/or performed to ensure the correct parts and procedures were utilized.

Additionally, you may be eligible for a refund of previously paid repairs. Refunds will only be provided for within the scope of this defect under recall.

Chronology :

On February 22, 2023, Forest River’s Office of Corporate Compliance (“OCC”) received a monthly General Managers Report (“GM”) which indicated that a the manufacturing plant received three complaints of the Fresh Water Tank dislodging from its in-chassis constraint system.

On February 23, 2023, OCC opened a research item into the concern. OCC asked the manufacturing plant to contact the dealers with vehicle inventory to inspect the specific model.

On February 24, 2023, OCC visited the manufacturing plant and found that certain PAT320TSBH models may be missing rearward and forward support of the fresh water tank.

On March 3, 2023, Forest Rivers Corporate Recall Committee voted to recall the affected vehicles.
