Summary
Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain 2021 Granite, LR, and TerraPro vehicles. The rear drive axle may have the incorrect type of brake cam installed, which could result in inoperative rear axle brakes.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the brake cams, and incorrect brake cams will be replaced, along with brake shoes, hardware, and wheel seals, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 10, 2021. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack’s number for this recall is SC0427.

RECALL INFORMATION
(July, 2021)
Mack has determined that certain model year 2021 trucks equipped with Meritor drum brakes may have the incorrect brake cams installed on the rear most drive axle.
Mack Trucks has not received any complaints or reports of vehicle crashes because of this non-compliance.
To ensure that these vehicles are equipped with the correct brake cams an inspection will be required. The wheels and drums on the rear most axle will need to be removed to gain access to the brake cams for inspection. If the brake cams are found to be correct, (see inspection process below) reassemble the unit and no further action is required. If the brake cams are found to be incorrect, replacement of the brake cams, brake shoes, brake hardware, and wheel seals may be required.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
Certain Mack North America vehicles manufactured between June, 29, 2020 to September, 22, 2020.
VEHICLE QUANTITY
There are 124 vehicles affected by this recall (124 U.S., 0 Canada).
Repair Instructions
1. Secure vehicle for service.
2. Following IMPACT operation ID 5122-03-02-01, remove both brake drums from the rear most drive axle.
3. Using the images below, inspect both passenger and driver side, rear most axle brake cams to ensure proper brake cams are installed.
a. If inspection is OK proceed to step 12.
b. If inspection is NOK proceed to step 4.
4. Remove brake shoes and brake hardware.
a. Refer to Meritor Literature on Demand (“LOD”) for proper procedure. The proper Maintenance Manual 4 (“MM4”) can be downloaded free of charge here: https://www.meritor.com/literature-on-demand
Correct manual title and picture shown for reference.
5. Remove the axle flange nuts and cones on the affected axle.
6. Remove the rear most axle shafts.
7. With axle shafts removed, follow hub removal procedure for PreSet Plus hubs in the Conmet service manual 10084476. Found here: https://conmet.com/literature/#wheelendlit
NOTE: The correct service manual is located under “Service Manual for ALL Hub Applications”.
8. Remove and replace the affected brake cams using the above Meritor MM4 from the Meritor LOD system.
9. Inspect the brake shoes, Drums, and Brake hardware for reuse. If any defects are found related to the incorrect brake cam being installed, replace with new components. Refer to IMPACT parts tab for current part numbers.
10. Reinstall the brake shoes and the brake hardware referencing the Meritor MM4 service manual.
11. Replace the wheel seal and install the drive hub according to specifications and procedures found in the ConMet service manual referenced above.
12. Complete the drum installation procedure found in IMPACT operation ID 5122-03-02-01.
13. Release the Vehicle for service.

Description
Mack has determined that certain model year 2021 trucks equipped with Meritor drum brakes may have the incorrect brake cams installed on the rear most drive axle. The rear rear axle brakes may be inoperative, which can result in increased stopping distances and potential risk of a vehicle crash.
The wheels and drums on the rear most axle will need to be removed to gain access to the brake cams for inspection. If the brake cams are found to be correct, reassemble the unit and no further action is required. If the brake cams are found to be incorrect, replacement of the brake cams, brake shoes, brake hardware, and wheel seals may be required.

Dealer Responsibilities
• The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
• Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.
