Affected vehicles have been identified using Production records. Continental GTC vehicles not included in the recall campaign do not have an exposed sharp edge on the airbag deflector bracket rivet. There are 1,610 Continental GTC vehicles affected Production Dates : JUN 20, 2019 – JAN 18, 2021 VIN Range 1 : Begin : SCBDB4ZG8LC074971 End : SCBDG4ZG6MC085681 ✔ Not sequential Description of Noncompliance : Description of the Noncompliance : Bentley has discovered that when riveting the airbag deflector bracket to the seat frame on Continental GTC vehicles, a sharp edge on the rivet could be created. FMVSS 1 : 214 – Side impact protection FMVSS 2 : 208 – Occupant crash protection Description of the Safety Risk : In the event of a crash where seat airbags are deployed, it is possible that the airbag material could be torn if a sharp edge is present on the rivet. A tear in the airbag material could reduce the effectiveness of occupant protection, potentially increasing the risk of an injury. Description of the Cause : Variability in the riveting procedure during manufacturing of the front seats could result in a protruding rivet mandrel. Component Part Number : N.905.113.02 and WHT.009.478 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Bentley Motors Ltd. Address : Pyms Lane Crewe Foreign States CW1 3PL Country : United Kingdom Chronology : 7th Dec 2018 – Airbag deflector bracket attached to seat frame in Production using rivet N.905.113.02. 11th Dec 2019 – Different rivet (WHT.009.478) used to attach airbag deflector bracket to seat frame in Production to resolve some RSI issues. 25th Nov 2020 – Issue with protruding rivet mandrels reported by Production. 26th Nov 2020 – Robust containment introduced into Production process. 21st Jul 2022 – Introduction of fixing airbag deflector bracket to seat frame using bolted joint in Production. Jul 2022 – Mar 2023 – Investigation carried out to evaluate relationship between the production issue and the customer risk. A technical risk assessment was carried out together with relevant validation testing. 1st Mar 2023 – Product Safety Committee made a decision to recall affected vehicles. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Bentley authorized retailers will inspect the affected front seats and, if necessary, remove the sharp edge on the airbag deflector bracket rivet free of charge. If a sharp edge requires rectification, it will take approximately one hour per seat to complete. Bentley will offer a reimbursement plan under this recall. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-152 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The components will remain unchanged, however, the rivets will be inspected. If a sharp edge is detected, it will be removed and protective tape applied to the reworked joint. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Series Containment 1 – rivets were inspected in Production and finished back to <1mm if mandrel protrusion observed Series Containment 2 – rivets were inspected in Production and protective tape applied over any mandrel protrusion >1mm. Series Solution – the rivet fixing strategy was replaced with a bolted joint to eliminate the risk of a sharp edge.
