NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V564
Manufacturer Delco Trailers LLC
Components SUSPENSION
Potential Number of Units Affected 1,209
Summary
Delco Trailers LLC (Delco) is recalling certain 2021-2022 C-Series, D-Series, and F-Series trailers equipped with Besser Pro 7000 lbs. Tubular Straight Axle assemblies. The weld that joins the spindle and the main axle may have been improperly placed, which can cause cracking or separation of the axle from the spindle.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the axle serial numbers, and replace the axles as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 9, 2022. Owners may contact Delco’s customer service at 1-903-739-9400.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Delco Trailers, Ltd. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain trailers manufactured between October 07, 2021, and March 31, 2022. Specifically, certain model year 2021-2022 Delco C-Series, D-Series, and F-Series trailers are equipped with 7,000-pound, tubular straight axles that may contain a defective weld.
Our records indicate that you purchased a trailer that may have subject axles.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
Due to a manufacturing error by one of Delco’s axle suppliers, the weld joining the spindle to the main beam of axle may not be properly placed. This could result in improper weld penetration or in an otherwise deficient weld. The potential deficient weld could fail when stressed by a heavy load or hard impact. Upon examination of spindle welds, any evidence of cracking means axle has been overstressed and is evidence that it could break under further pressure. A weld failure could result in cracking of axle or separation of spindle, which increases the risk of a crash.
WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM?
To correct the problem, Delco is recalling the entire population of axles specified by the supplier. Delco will also cover the cost to inspect your trailer’s axles to identify if your trailer is equipped with axle(s) included in the axle supplier’s recall. The inspection and any required replacement of axles will be conducted free of charge to customers.
WHAT IF YOU ARE A LESSOR?
Federal law requires that you forward a copy of this safety recall notice to the lessee within 10 days.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
At your earliest convenience, you should contact your nearest Delco Trailers dealer to arrange an inspection. Any axles within the supplier’s recall range will be replaced free of charge.
The inspection will take approximately 0.5 hours. For axles that need to be replaced, you will be able to schedule a time for the replacement, which will take approximately 1-2 hours.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THIS REPAIR?
You may be eligible to receive a reimbursement for the cost of repairs made prior to receiving this notice. Please contact Delco at peterg@delcotrailers.com or 903-218-0675 to determine whether you are eligible for reimbursement.

We are taking this action in the interest of safety and satisfaction with our products. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Delco Trailers, Ltd. 4 7K AXLE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE Due to a manufacturing issue at one of our axle suppliers, we are recalling and replacing certain axles on Delco Trailers. -How to Identify Affected Axles: Date, Serial Number, and Location Only 7k straight axles manufactured between October 7, 2021, and October 25, 2021, are affected. The serial number range on these axles is 2020015994 through 2020017408. This information can be found on the axle label, which is located on the main beam of the axle. Please see the attached picture to note where to find either the date or serial number of the axle. If you have any difficulty identifying the axle, such as a damaged identification, please contact Delco for assistance. -How to Replace Axles Remove Old Axle: Start by loosening the lugs nuts on both tires. Next, raise the trailer using a hydraulic jack, and secure it on jack stands at four points. With the trailer securely resting on the jack stands, remove the tires and set aside. If the trailer is equipped with brakes, disconnect the brake lines and take care to ensure the lines do not get snagged during removal of the axle. If the trailer is equipped with shocks, disconnect the lower shock mount from the axle and set the mounting bolt aside. Inspect the shocks for leaks or worn mounting grommets and replace if they are worn. Remove the wheel hubs and brake hardware and set aside. The axle is secured to the leaf springs with a U-Bolt. Remove the U-Bolts on both ends of the axle, and the axle should be completely disconnected from the trailer. With an assistant on the other end of the axle, lift and move it to the side until completely free of the leaf springs. Once clear of the springs, pull the axle all the way out from under the trailer. Attach New Axle: Slide the axle under the trailer and position it so the leaf springs rest on the spring seats. Using new hardware, bolt the axle in place, torqued between 45-70 ft. lbs. and ensure the axle is oriented to have the brake wire facing the rear of the trailer. Reconnect the shock absorbers if applicable. Reinstall the wheel hubs and brake assembly and reconnect the brake lines. Finally, install the wheels and lower the trailer from the jack stands. Be sure to check brakes for proper function, and the job is complete. -Reporting and Compensation After inspecting axles, Dealers will need to document whether the axles need to be replaced or if the axles are not within the range above. Axles that are replaced will need documentation of serial number of the old axle as well as the serial number of the new axle that it is replaced with. Trailers that are inspected and are determined to not require replacement axles will also need to be documented and this documentation will need to be returned to Delco as well. Delco will be compensating Dealerships $20 per inspection as well as compensating Dealerships 2 hours of shop labor for each set (2) axles replaced. -Additional Information If you need any additional information, please contact Delco at (903) 218-0675 or peterg@delcotrailers.com. Delco Trailers strives to stand beside their dealers and behind their products. We want this to be as an efficient process as possible; and we sincerely thank you for your support.
