IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE

NHTSA Recall ID:  22T006

To: Continental Authorized Motorcycle Tire Distributors and Dealers

Continental Tire the Americas, LLC –Tire Safety Recall

See attached list of affected tires in the Attachment No. 1 and reference photos in Attachment No. 2.

Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (“CTA”) announced a tire safety recall involving approx. 62,000 tires from the tire lines Continental ContiGo!, TKC80, LB and K62 which have been sold in the replacement market and as original equipment on new motorcycles. CTA has determined that superficial groove cracks in the tread rubber developed during testing. Groove cracking may appear during the tire service life and can lead to tread separation, increasing the risk of a crash.

Please read this notice carefully and follow the steps outlined below, CTA requests your assistance in:

1. Identifying
2. Removing and Replacing
3. Tire Return and Disposal
4. Miscellaneous

The following instructions will outline the details of this program.

1. Identifying Tires by Product Line and DOT

1.1. Subject Tires

The subject tires were sold as replacement and original equipment tires. The tires must match both the tire line, full DOT tire identification number (TIN) and production period to be part of the recall:

1. Tire Lines – ContiGo!, K62, LB and some sizes of the TKC80 tire line
2. DOT TIN’s – see list of affected articles shown in Attachment no. 1 below
3. Production period: 0119 to 1722

Examples for full identification see Attachment no. 2 and 3.

1.2 End Consumers

We request that dealers research their sales records for end consumers who may have purchased one or more of the subject tires. Email end consumer contact information to ContiMoto@custhelp.com or call the toll-free number 1-888-799-2168 (Menu option – Motorcycle Tire Recall) with the following consumer information:

  • End consumer name, address, and phone number
  • Quantity of subject tires sold to that end consumer
  • Tire line, size and full DOT
  • Date of tire(s) sale

CTA will begin notifying end consumers that have been identified as having purchased affected tires. These end consumers will be directed to contact the dealer where they purchased their motorcycle or tire to schedule an appointment for having a replacement tire installed on their motorcycle. In case you are contacted, we request your assistance in verifying, removing tires included in this program and replacing with a substantially similar tire.

We ask distributors to forward this information to all their locations and to their dealers.

2. Removing and Replacing Affected Tires in Service

2.1 Removing Recall Tires

In case you are contacted, you are requested to remove from use all recall tires which you identify as included in this recall program, see attached list in the Attachment No. 1. All removed tires have to be rendered unserviceable (e.g. by cutting through the sidewall besides the DOT) and handed back to the tire owner. The tire owner will submit photos of the scrapped tire to CTA in order to initiate the shipping of the replacement tire. The tire owner will receive a reimbursement check which covers the costs for mounting, balancing, and disposal.

2.2 Replacing Recall Tires

You are requested to replace all affected tires with the replacement received from CTA.

The tires must meet tire line and full DOT to be part of the recall, see attached list in the Attachment No. 1.

2.3 Previously Replaced Tires

In case the consumer has already replaced a tire that is included in this program and is seeking reimbursement, please refer them to call 1-888-799-2168 (Menu option – Motorcycle Tire Recall) for assistance.

2.4 Tire Disposal

All tires that are identified as included in this program must be disposed of after CTA has received and verified the pictures of the replaced tire(s). Replacement tire(s) and/or reimbursement will only be issued once the recall tires have been verified by CTA.

3.1 NEW Tires from Stock – Direct Customer and Distributor Procedure

Each direct customer or distributor must check their on hand new tire inventory for the subject tires and return these tires to CTA.

Please follow the special instructions below:

(Note: for normal warranty returns continue to follow all current procedures). Attach a copy of the Return Form NHTSA Recall ID:  22T006. You must indicate “Safety Campaign” in the Reason for Removal field. For clear identification write “RECALL” on Tread.

  • The direct customer or distributor returning tires from inventory are to ship the tires weekly.
  • The preferred shipping method is in quantities of five or more tires. When shipping with this method, ship via YRC, “Freight Collect” call (800) 357-9199 (USA only) to schedule a pickup, reference code “RECALL”.

On the Bill of Lading indicate shipment terms of “Freight Collect”. CTA will be billed for the freight charges. Please remember to verify the tire count before signing the Bill of Lading.  Stipulate on the Bill of Lading “Recall scrap rubber tires – freight class 110”.

  • Quantities of four or less tires, call 1-888-799-2168 and ask for assistance.

Attachment no. 2 – how to identify Tire line, DOT Plant + TIN Code and Production Week

Tire Line Tire Line Sidewall Picture Examples of DOT Plant and TIN Code
TKC80 Multiple TIN codes affected – see Attachment 1
ContiGo! Multiple TIN codes affected – see Attachment 1
K62 Multiple TIN codes affected – see Attachment 1
LB Multiple TIN codes affected – see Attachment 1

Attachment no. 3 – how to identify the specific article

Because there are several articles affected which have the same Size + same DOT Plant and TIN Code on the tire sidewall, it is important to identify the specific article to replace/reimburse them correctly.

Based on the Size and Service Description

First, check besides the Size of the tire also the corresponding Service Description (Load Index + Speed Symbol). Please see examples below.

According to the example: Size 130/90-17, Service Description (Load Index + Speed Symbol) 68V

Example 2: Imperial Tire Size

According to the example: Size 3.25-18, Service Description (Load Index + Speed Symbol) 59S

Based on the Sidewall Color

The tire lines K62 and LB are available with black sidewalls (standard) as well as with white sidewalls. All tires with the white sidewalls have the designation ending with “WW” in the table in the Attachment no. 1.

Chronology :

February 2022: CTA filed a Noncompliance Information Report (NHTSA ID 22T003) to initiate a recall of the complete ContiScoot tire line because of potential tread groove cracking. During the investigation, CTA evaluated and performed endurance testing on additional motorcycle tire products.

February – April 2022: The additional endurance tests revealed further products from the Continental tire lines TKC80, ContiGo!, K62 and LB which are sensitive to develop groove cracks.

April 29, 2022: CTA made a determination that a noncompliance on various products exists and therefore decided to initiate this recall. CTA is not aware of any field complaints for this condition, and has not received any reports of property damage or personal injury claims for the affected products.
