Chronology :

September 23, 2021
NTN Driveshaft Anderson, Inc. identified a steel ball component issue from a hard to install condition of the joint sub-assembly. Hardness confirmation of steel ball component confirmed insufficiently heat-treated steel balls. NTN Driveshaft Columbus was also notified.

September 27, 2021
Tier-2 supplier of the steel ball component confirmed only specific production lots received abnormal heat-treatment due to improper air/gas mixture and temperature variation from furnace misfires.

September 30, 2021
NTN Driveshaft Anderson, Inc. informed Honda of potentially suspect driveshafts that were shipped to Honda.
These potentially suspect driveshafts were assembled with insufficiently heat-treated steel balls for the front drives shaft outboard joint sub-assembly.

October 4, 202
NTN Driveshaft Columbus informed GM of the potentially suspect Driveshafts shipped to GM plant. These potentially suspect driveshafts were also assembled with insufficiently heat-treated steel balls for the front drives shaft outboard joint sub-assembly.

Mid-October to mid-November, 2021
NTN completed reproduction testing of the potentially suspect parts. After continued use, the steel balls could deform from heat generated by the driveshaft, resulting in outboard joint sub-assembly seizure and driveshaft failure.

November 25, 2021
Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.

January 20.2022
GM also decided to conduct a safety recall against potentially effected parts established through traceability efforts.
Reference General Motors Campaign Numbers 212351030, N212351031, and N212351032

As of 3/29/22, to the best of our knowledge, Honda and GM has not received any warranty claims, field reports nor reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue.
