Components ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected 6,641
Summary
Prevost Car (US) Inc. (Prevost) is recalling certain 2010-2023 H3-45, H3-45 VIP, X3-45, X3-45 Com, and X3-45 VIP vehicles. In the event of the alternator front bearing seizing, the alternator belt may continue to operate, causing the bearing to overheat.
Remedy
Prevost will replace the alternator belt, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 30, 2022. Owners may contact Prevost customer service at 1-866-870-2046.
Notes

Chronology :
-2016-12-24 First Case reported
-From 2016-12-24 to 2020-12-08 nine (9) more cases were reported through field reports
-2021-04-23 First analysis on alternator front bearing failure. No evidence was found to consider this failure as a safety related issue.
-2021-05-18 NHTSA-ODI opened a preliminary evaluation (PE21-011) related to alternator front bearing failure and AFSS activation.
-2021-07-23 Prevost sent the package of information required by ODI
-2022-01- ODI came back to Prevost with a new set of questions
-2022-02-28 Prevost sent a package to answer the ODI
-2022-03-09 NHTSA and Prevost met to discuss ODI findings. ODI defined that even with the low percentage of failure on alternators because of front bearing failure, there could be a safety related defect related to front bearing failure
-2022-03-15 Internal inquiry was started to analyze root cause. A link between the introduction of new belts and an increase of thermal events related to alternator’ front bearing failure was identified. This new information triggered a new new case to present to Volvo Product Safety Committee (PSC)
-2022-03-30 Case presented to PSC. PSC decided there is a safety related defect and a recall is required
-2022-03-31 Preliminary discussion with NHTSA to expose the findings
-2022-04-06 Prevost submitted the vehicle defect report to NHTSA

1 Associated Investigation
Alternator Front Bearing Failure
NHTSA ID: PE21011
Dated opened: May 13, 2021
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is opening a Preliminary Evaluation after receiving a tip from a fleet safety manager concerning alternator front bearing failures that cause elevated temperatures within the engine compartment, resulting in the fire suppression system (FSS) activating, immediately shutting the engine down, and rendering the bus inoperable.
Review of Early Warning Reporting Data identified 9 field reports for Model Year (MY)2015 through MY2019 H3 and X3 Prevost buses, describing alternator failures in any of 3 alternators equipped on the bus. In some cases, a minor fire occurred damaging nearby electrical harnesses.
An immediate shut down of the bus can increase the risk of a crash or injury of passengers when transferring to another bus.
ODI is opening this investigation to evaluate the cause, consequence, scope and frequency of the alleged defect in the subject Prevost buses.

This new information triggered a new new case to present to Volvo Product Safety Committee (PSC) -2022-03-30 Case presented to PSC. PSC decided there is a safety related defect and a recall is required -2022-03-31 Preliminary discussion with NHTSA to expose the findings -2022-04-06 Prevost submitted the vehicle defect report to NHTSA Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-221 Page 5 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Prevost will change the defective belts for polyester belts. A safety recall will be launched to inform customers about the defect and letters will be sent to advise how to proceed to correct. Prevost will replace the defective belts free of charge (Parts and labor) for the customers. A maintenance instruction sheet will be provided to customers to explain and instruct how to inspect alternators. In case a customer has already replaced the defective belts before the safety recall has been released, Prevost plans to offer a reimbursement as previously described in the Prevost Reimbursement Plan. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : New belts with new part numbers will be installed on all vehicles affected. These new belts will be in polyester. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Prevost is currently on delivery stop, until parts become available. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Note Prevost does not have a dealer network and the dates entered for the planned dealer notification begin/end date are only to avoid NHTSA Recall Portal error while submitting the recall report. Planned Dealer Notification Date : JUN 03, 2022 – JUN 03, 2022 Planned Owner Notification Date : JUN 03, 2022 – JUN 03, 2022 * NR – Not Reported

Submission Date : MAY 26, 2022 NHTSA Recall No. : 22V-221 Manufacturer Recall No. : SR22-05 Manufacturer Information : Manufacturer Name : Prevost Car (US) Inc. Address : 260 Banker Road PLATTSBURGH NY 12901 Company phone : 999 Population : Number of potentially involved : 5,112 Estimated percentage with defect : 100 % Vehicle Information : Vehicle 1 : 2010-2023 Prevost H3-45; X3-45; X3-45 Com; H3-45 VIP: X3-45 VIP Vehicle Type : BUSES, MEDIUM & HEAVY VEHICLES Body Style : OTHER Power Train : DIESEL Descriptive Information : Components causing this defect have been installed on production for MY2015 and after. However, these components have been installed on after market to vehicles manufactured before MY2015 so, Prevost has considered that affected population is all vehicles produced from 2010, the year of introduction of Volvo Engine. Production Dates : JAN 01, 2010 – APR 04, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : A small percentage of Prevost units have experienced thermal events upon failure of alternator front bearing because the robust alternator belts continues to turn the alternator bearing even after the failure. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In some cases, when alternator’s front bearing fails, it could overheats causing a local thermal event. Description of the Cause : New and more resistant belts were installed on MY2015 and later vehicles. With this new type of belts, in event of alternator front bearing seize, belt may continue to drive the alternator causing abnormal friction for a longer period of time than the old ones. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Noise coming from alternator front bearing and, maybe, alternator not charging telltale light.
