July 2, 2020 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V391000
Bolts Securing Suspension Spring May Be Too Long
If the bolts carry the load rather than the bracket, it can cause them to break, affecting the vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V391
Manufacturer Airstream, Inc.
Components SUSPENSION
Potential Number of Units Affected 35
Summary
Airstream, Inc. (Airstream) is recalling certain model year 2020-2021 Airstream Interstate motorhomes equipped with VB suspension systems. The lock portion of the countersink bolts attaching the VB Suspension system to the vehicle may be too long preventing the panhard rod bracket from fully contacting the springs, resulting in bolts absorbing the load instead of the bracket.
Remedy
Airstream will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspension bolts, free of charge. This recall began August 26, 2020. Owners may contact Airstream customer service at 1-877-596-6505.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
PROBLEM:
Airstream has determined that due to a discrepancy in the dimensions of the mounting bolts for the air ride system used on the Interstate & Atlas motorhomes, the load of the suspension springs is being carried by the mounting bolts rather than the panhard rod bracket, which may cause the bolts to break. If this were to happen, it would allow the axel to move fore and aft resulting in loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash, personal, personal injury and/or property damage.
RANGE OF VEHICLES INVOLVED:
2020 & 2021 Airstream Interstate & Atlas motorhomes built between March 13, 2020-August 11, 2020 Serial Number Range: 306479-308120
Note: Because our VINs do not run in a contiguous series, there will be units in the VIN range which will not be affected by this recall.
SERVICE ACTION:
Inspection of the air suspension mounting bolts will occur. If the bolts pass the inspection, no further action is needed. If the bolts do not pass the inspection, the incorrect bolts will be removed, and the correct bolts will be installed.
Please contact the Airstream Warranty Department at 877-596-6111 Ext. 7401 to order the necessary parts to complete the recall remedy. These will be sent at no charge.

- CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY – Road Armor is engineered to obtain maximum absorption. With its anti-shock technology, road shock and vibrations are dampened, resulting in less chucking and less strain on the trailer
- ALL-AROUND PROTECTION – The patent pending design uses a single pivoting arm that is permanently engaged with the trailer axles’ leaf springs. This allows it to constantly absorb and dampen road shock from the leading or trailing spring, utilizing the trailer’s natural motion
- ULTIMATE UPGRADE – Road Armor was designed to offer RVers and trailer owners a superior suspension enhancement solution that can be added as an easy aftermarket upgrade, and is also offered as an exceptional substitution for torsion axles
- HIGH-GRADE HARDWARE – Included in the kit are two tandem equalizers, greaseable bronze bushings that improve wear and tear, and automotive-grade fasteners that provide exceptional corrosion protection and extend overall product life. Mounting hardware is sold separately
- SPECIFIC WEIGHT RATING – Road Armor is configured to operate an axle weight capacity of 3,500 to 8,000 pounds
- Smoother towing than conventional leaf springs.Fit Type: Universal Fit
- Provides 3" of suspension travel
- Protects from damaging road shock
- Easy bolt-on installation
- Tested and rated for up to 8K miles
- Upgrade Your Trailer's Suspension: These Sumo Springs for trailers provide improved driver control and comfort, so you can experience a smoother, more comfortable ride. With the ability to support heavy rear loads, you can keep your vehicle level and eliminate the dreaded sag that comes from a heavy cargo load. Say goodbye to jarring bumps on the road, as these springs help to absorb them with ease. Plus, you'll experience less sway, so you can stay firmly in control even when taking sharp turns.
- Low Maintenance: SumoSprings compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.
- Enhances Load Carrying Ability: When you're carrying a heavy load, your factory suspension can compress, causing your rear axle to bear the weight of both the extra load and your vehicle. This leads to sag, which can cause problems with traction, steering, and braking. But with SumoSprings, you can upgrade your vehicle's suspension. These progressive springs adjust to the weight of your cargo, compressing more for heavier loads and less for lighter loads.
- Weight Capacity: SumoSprings will not increase your vehicle's weight-carrying capacity. These springs have a 1000 lb Capacity at 50% Compression.
- Easy to Install: SumoSprings are custom designed to fit your vehicle and install easily with no drilling required!
- INCREASED SUSPENSION TRAVEL- Adds 3" of suspension travel to the tandem axle equalizer, which absorbs more shock and is smoother than traditional leaf springs;
- RUBBER CUSHIONING - The CRE3000 suspension adds rubber cushioning washers to better absorb impacts from the road and prevent damage to the body;
- BETTER QUALITY - The use of stronger cast iron parts, the interior is also pre-installed with bronze bushings, the connection is smoother and more reliable, an ideal upgrade to the trailer equalizer
- EASY TO INSTALL - The product is a complete product, no need to re-process and assemble, very easy to install
