Steering Gear Assembled Incorrectly
A loss of steering control increases the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V088
Manufacturer Navistar, Inc.
Components STEERING
Potential Number of Units Affected 893
Summary
Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2024 International HX, LT, RH and 2024-2025 International HV, MV trucks and 2024 IC Bus CE commercial buses. The steering gear assemblies may have been assembled incorrectly with fewer recirculating balls than are required, which may result in a loss of steering control.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the defective gears, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 18, 2024. Owners may contact Navistar’s customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar’s number for this recall is 24503.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect :
Description of the Defect : As reported by R. H. Sheppard Co., Inc. in 24E-094, the defect is a steering gear assembled with fewer than the required number of recirculating balls.
FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : As reported by R. H. Sheppard Co., Inc in 24E-094, a steering gear with fewer than the required number of recirculating balls may bind when loads are applied. In some cases, the balls may align on the same side of the gear’s worm-shaft and concentrated loads may cause the gear’s internal parts to fracture resulting in loss of vehicle steering. Loss of steering increases the likelihood of a crash.
Description of the Cause : A reported by R. H. Sheppard Co., Inc in 24E-094, an error of the steering gear recirculating ball insertion process occurred during assembly. A gap in the rework process allowed for potentially less than the required number of balls to be installed into the gear without detection. Identification of Any Warning
