Summary

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Western Star 4900 and 2023 Western Star 6900 vehicles. A defect in the inversion valve may delay park brake engagement, which could allow the vehicle to move unintentionally. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, “Air Brake Systems.”

The remedy is currently under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 10, 2024. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL992.

573 Chronology:

On November 15th, 2023, DTNA was notified by ZF that another vehicle manufacturer, Spartan Fire, had initiated a recall of certain vehicles equipped with inversion valves supplied by ZF on the basis that the parking brake engagement may not meet the requirements of FMVSS 121. ZF informed DTNA that it may have supplied DTNA with the same or similar parts as those provided to Spartan but did not provide DTNA with any further details at that time. DTNA immediately began an investigation to evaluate whether those valves, when installed in the manner and in the specific vehicle applications used by DTNA , could experience the same or similar issues described by Spartan. In particular, DTNA’s investigation was focused on the potential for delay of the parking brake engagement and the length of any delay in the park brake engagement. Through December into January, DTNA attempted to engage with its supplier for further information on multiple occasions. DTNA reviewed its warranty database and identified one warranty claim that appeared similar to the statement made by Spartan in its recall filing, but which did not contain sufficient information to make a determinative assessment. In the meantime, DTNA continued to engage with its supplier to better understand the issue.

On January 3, 2024, ZF advised DTNA that a specific shipment of inversion valves may contain the same defect as that identified in Spartan’s recall report and that there was no information available to ZF that would indicate the valve would function any differently in the DTNA application.

Because it cannot rule out the possibility of delayed park brake engagement and out of an abundance of caution, DTNA decided on January 10, 2024, to conduct a recall to address a noncompliance in the affected vehicles.

A review of claims, field reports, customer complaints, VOQs, incident reports, etc. uncovered only one warranty claim (documented on 06/09/2023) that may relate to the present issue. The are no accident for death or injuries known.
