Summary
Mack Trucks, Inc (Mack) is recalling certain 2024 Granite vehicles. The bearing journals may not be fully seated in the steering knuckle assembly, preventing the proper installation of the wheel end hub assembly.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the steering knuckle assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 8, 2024. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack’s number for this recall is SC0456.

Description
Vehicles may be equipped with Hendrickson Composilite EXS20 and SC 20 steerable auxiliary lift axle suspension assemblies with bearing journals not fully seated to the backbones of the left and right-side steering knuckle assembly in order for the wheel end hub assemblies to be properly installed. This can result in foreign object debris on the roadway, increasing the risk of a crash and/or injury.
There have been no field reports, warranty claims or customer complaints associated with this issue.
Vehicles will be inspected to identify suspect Hendrickson Composolite EXS20 and SC 20 steerable auxiliary lift axle suspension assemblies, those which are suspect will be repaired following Hendrickson’s Instructions.

Dealer Responsibilities
- The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act require dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
- Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.
Notification Release Schedule
- Vehicle list will be posted on the Trucks Dealer Portal on December 22, 2023.
- Owner notification letters will be released on or before February 08, 2024.
- Repair Instruction will be released once they are available.

November 17, 2023, Volvo Product Safety Office receives a report of a potential issue with Hendrickson Auxiliary axles where the bearing journal is not fully installed, and a formal investigation is opened.
November 27, 2023, after review by Product Safety Evaluation Committee a request is made to Hendrickson to provide their safety inputs to their product issue.
December 18, 2023, Hendrickson provides formal notification that they have filed an equipment recall Composilite EXS20 and SC20 steerable auxiliary lift axle suspension assemblies and individual steering knuckle assembly components equipped with bearing journals that may not have been seated correctly to the backbones of the left and right-side steering knuckle assembly components during manufacture.
December 18, 2023, Volvo Product Safety Committee meets and reviews Hendrickson’s filing and impacts on our product and decides that a product safety defect exists.
December 22, 2023, DIR 573 Report filed with NHTSA.
There have been no accidents or injuries related to this issue, there have been no warranty claims, field reports or customer complaints associated with this issue.

Description of the Safety Risk : As reported by Hendrickson: In some cases, the above-referenced condition may cause a loss of oil lubricant from the wheel end hub assemblies. Over an extended period of operation, use of the lift axle suspension assemblies in this condition can result in (1) the respective axle spindles to become loose from the steering knuckle assemblies or otherwise fracture and/or (2) wheel end hub damage. This can result in foreign object debris on the roadway,
increasing the risk of a crash and/or injury. As reported by Hendrickson they Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-887 Page 2 had not received any field reports of any such occurrences or any associated accidents.
Description of the Cause : Hendrickson reports that the cause identified as excessive wear on the tooling used to install the journal rings and inadequate quality measurements performed after such installations. Identification of Any Warning

Description of Remedy Program : “Vehicles will be recalled and inspected to identify suspect Hendrickson
Composolite EXS20 and SC 20 steerable auxiliary lift axle suspension assemblies, those which are suspect will be repaired following Hendrickson’s Instructions.
Reimbursement for the recall will be covered by Manufacturer’s Reimbursement Plan on file with NHTSA.” How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The replacement steering knuckle assemblies will include journal rings that are fully seated into the knuckle backbones.
