Inadequate Rear Axle Hub Lubrication
Rear drive axle failure can result in a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Summary
Gillig, LLC (Gillig) is recalling certain 2023 Low Floor vehicles. An inadequate amount of lubricant in the rear axle hubs may cause failure of the rear drive axles.
Remedy
Gillig will inspect for correct rear axle hub lubricant levels and add lubricant as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 15, 2023. Owners may contact Gillig customer service at 1-510-264-5073 or 1-800-735-1500.

08/27/2023 GILLIG Customer Service received notification about a rear axle failure on a bus in transit from the GILLIG factory to the end customer site and started root cause investigation of the issue.
10/03/2023 Four (4) additional buses were identified in the field as potentially affected by the same issue.
These buses were inspected before customer acceptance and repaired as indicated by Meritor.
10/24/2023 Thirty four (34) buses were identified to be potentially affected and, therefore, requiring inspection.
11/24/2023 GILLIG completed population analysis and confirmed the initial estimates.
11/27/2023 GILLIG’s Safety Committee decided to file a formal Safety recall to repair the vehicle population affected by the issue.

lube level. Pursuant to 49 CFR 577.11(e), GILLIG requests NHTSA to be
exempted from providing a pre-notification reimbursement plan or this
issue. Pre-notification product failures would have been addressed under
the terms of either Meritor’s or GILLIG’s manufacturer warranty.
