The power to keep the breakaway switch energized in a detach scenario was coming from the tow vehicle instead of the house batteries. The recalled population differs from others in that this population has hydraulic disc brakes (an option that has an actuator and requires different wiring than a standard drum brake RV). There are a total of 68 RVs in scope (60 being recalled as 8 of them are being fixed here prior to shipping. These range from model year 2023 to 2024 and are on the following models. 295MK; 310RL; 340RL; 370FB; 382RK; 385FL; 390MP; 395DS Production Dates : JAN 30, 2023 – AUG 07, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : 7M5FP422XPB202950 End : 7M5FP4320RB203753 ✔ Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The breakaway switch that normally has power from the house batteries and allows the brakes to engage upon being detached does not. The wiring was such that the only power source for the breakaway switch came from the tow vehicle. Due to this defect in wiring, in a situation that the tow vehicle detaches from the trailer, the trailer brakes would not engage to assist in stopping the tow vehicle. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : The RV would not engage it’s brakes upon detaching form the tow vehicle. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-569 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of the Safety Risk : This would mean a detached trailer would continue to stay in motion until it came in contact with something and potentially causing an accident. Description of the Cause : The cause is that the power source going to the breakaway switch was not coming from the house batteries but coming from the tow vehicle instead. This does not allow the brakes on the trailer to engage properly in a detach scenario. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : In the case that the breakaway switch is pulled and a tow vehicle not connected, the trailer brakes would not engage. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The remedy will be to run power from the house batteries to the breakaway cable. This will allow the RV to energize the brakes upon becoming detached from the tow vehicle. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-569 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedied component will have a power line ran from the battery to the breakaway switch. The recalled / non remedied component will not have this power source but rather the tow vehicle, thru the tow plug, will be powering the brake actuator. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The recall condition was corrected in production with an immediate wiring change which provides power to the breakaway switch from the house batteries instead of coming from the tow plug / tow vehicle. The correction was made on 8/9/2023 and any RVs with this specific option will be wired properly. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Alliance RV has found the defect, the correction has been identified.
