Improperly Wired Breakaway Switch
A breakaway switch that does not have power will not activate the trailer brakes, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2023 Puma Pause Travel trailers. The breakaway switch may be incorrectly wired and cause the battery to not charge, resulting in no power to the breakaway switch.
Remedy
Dealers will rewire the breakaway switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 3, 2023. Owners may contact Forest River Customer Service at 1-574-327-2681. Forest River’s number for this recall is 426-1613.

Concern:
The breakaway switch may not be wired properly, therefore the breakaway battery may not charge in transit.
Disconnect the vehicles’ battery Positive and Negative, disconnect any House battery(s) Positive and Negative, if equipped with a generator ensure it is off and lastly, ensure the vehicle is disconnected from shore power. Block any tires/wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Failure to do so may result in electrocution, fire or other personal injury, property damage and/or death.
STEP 1: DISCONNECT UNIT FROM SHORE POWER;
STEP 2: TURN BATTERY DISCONNECT TO THE OFF POSITION (FIGURE 1);
STEP 3: REMOVE ACCESS PANEL UNDER BATTERIES IN REAR STORAGE COMPARTMENT (FIRGURE 1);
STEP 4: REMOVE THE 10AMP FUSE THAT CONNECTS THE 10 GA. GREEN WIRE COMING FROM THE FLOOR TO THE 10 GA GREEN WIRE GOING UP TO THE BATTERIES;
STEP 5: REPLACE ACCESS PANEL;
STEP 6: LOCATE BATTERY UNDER A-FRAME STORAGE BOX DIRECTLY BEHIND HITCH COUPLER;
STEP 7: REMOVE 4 MOUNTING SCREWS FROM BATTERY BOX AND CAREFULLY DROP DOWN TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE LID (FIGURE 2);
STEP 8: CUT ZIP TIE, OPEN LID, AND DISCONNECT BLACK AND WHITE WIRES FROM BATTERY TERMINALS (FIGURE 3);
STEP 9: LOCATE JUNCTION BOX IN FRONT CARGO AREA AND REMOVE COVER TO GAIN ACCESS TO WIRING;
STEP 10: SEPARATE 10 GA GREEN (TRAILER HARNESS) AND 14 GA BLACK (TRAILER HARNESS);
STEP 11: CAP 10 GA GREEN (TRAILER HARNESS);
STEP 12: DISCONNECT 14 GA BLUE (TRAILER HARNESS) AND 10 GA BLACK (7-WAY);
STEP 13: CONNECT 14 GA BLACK (TRAILER HARNESS) TO 10 GA BLACK (7-WAY);
STEP 14: CONNECT 14 GA BLUE (TRAILER HARNESS) TO 16 GA RED WIRES (1-TRAILER HARNESS & 1- 7-WAY);
STEP 15: RE-INSTALL JUNCTION BOX COVER;
STEP 16: PRIOR TO RE-INSTALLING SMALL BATTERY IN A- FRAME, VERIFY THE BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED;
STEP 17: IF A BATTERY CHARGE IS NEEDED, CONNECT APPROPRIATE CHARGER FOR A LEAD-ACID BATTERY TO THE CORRECT BATTERY TERMINALS;
STEP 18: ONCE A FULL CHARGE CAN BE VERIFIED, RE- CONNECT BLACK & WHITE WIRES FROM THE TRAILER HARNESS TO THE APPROPRIATE TERMINALS ON THE BATTERY;
STEP 19: RE-SECURE LID ON BATTERY BOX;
STEP 20: RE-SECURE BATTERY BOX TO TRAILER FRAME;
– Break-Away Cable battery will now have constant power from Tow Vehicle when trailer is electrically connected to Tow Vehicle –
– TOW MODE for the Garmin / MORryde systems will now be activated when the Tow Vehicle’s brakes are applied –
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This notice is also sent in accordance with the requirements of the United States’ National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Forest River has decided that a defect, which relates to the motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2023 Pause Travel Trailer Recreational Vehicles. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.
WHAT IS THE DEFECT/NONCOMPLIANCE?
The breakaway switch may not be wired properly; therefore, the breakaway battery may not charge in transit.
EVALUATION OF THE RISK TO THE VEHICLE AND OPERATOR(S) RELATED TO THE RECALL.
If there is not power to the breakaway switch, the trailer brakes will not activate which may lead to property damage, crash, injury, and/or death.
WHAT IS FOREST RIVER AND OUR DEALERSHIPS GOING TO DO?
Forest River is notifying dealerships of the recall. You may have the recall corrected at any Forest River dealership. However, it is preferable if you have your selling dealership perform the remedy. Forest River completely covers your cost for the remedy; you will not receive any bill of sale for anything covered under the above recall number.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Please contact your dealer immediately and request a service appointment to schedule the free remedy. The remedy will wire the breakaway switch correctly to constant power. The vehicle Owner is responsible for arranging to have the work completed. Please state you have been notified by Forest River of having a recall in process for your vehicle and provide the recall number for the dealership. It is also helpful to the dealership to have a copy of this letter when you take your vehicle in for the recall remedy.

HOW LONG WILL THE REMEDY PROCESS TAKE?
The estimated time of repair is .75 hours. However, the dealership may need to keep your vehicle or schedule an appointment with you for a later date to fit into their regular service schedule.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR REPAIRS TO YOUR VEHICLE FOR THIS PARTICULAR CONDITION?
If you have already paid for a repair that is within the scope of this defect under recall, you still need to have this recall inspected and/or performed to ensure the correct parts and procedures were utilized.

Chronology :
On March 22, 2023, Forest Rivers Office of Corporate Compliance (“OCC”) was advised that on certain models built at one manufacturing plant, the breakaway switch was not wired correctly. The concern was discovered during a routine Standards Audit of the manufacturing process. The same day, OCC and the manufacturing plant was able to determine all vehicles affected.
On March 24, 2023, Forest Rivers Corporate Recall Committee voted to recall.
On April 4, 2023, Pause Manufacturing plants’ manager contacted OCC stating that the Puma name is incorrectly stated. The vehicle is a Forest River Inc. Pause travel trailer. Amending to remove “Puma” from the 573 report.

Dear Forest River Customer:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This notice is also sent in accordance with the requirements of the United States’ National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Forest River has decided that a defect, which relates to the motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2023 Pause Travel Trailer Recreational Vehicles. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.
WHAT IS THE DEFECT/NONCOMPLIANCE?
The breakaway switch may not be wired properly; therefore, the breakaway battery may not charge in transit.
EVALUATION OF THE RISK TO THE VEHICLE AND OPERATOR(S) RELATED TO THE RECALL.
If there is not power to the breakaway switch, the trailer brakes will not activate which may lead to property damage, crash, injury, and/or death.
WHAT IS FOREST RIVER AND OUR DEALERSHIPS GOING TO DO?
Forest River is notifying dealerships of the recall. You may have the recall corrected at any Forest River dealership. However, it is preferable if you have your selling dealership perform the remedy. Forest River completely covers your cost for the remedy; you will not receive any bill of sale for anything covered under the above recall number.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Please contact your dealer immediately and request a service appointment to schedule the free remedy. The remedy will wire the breakaway switch correctly to constant power. The vehicle Owner is responsible for arranging to have the work completed. Please state you have been notified by Forest River of having a recall in process for your vehicle and provide the recall number for the dealership. It is also helpful to the dealership to have a copy of this letter when you take your vehicle in for the recall remedy.

HOW LONG WILL THE REMEDY PROCESS TAKE?
The estimated time of repair is .75 hours. However, the dealership may need to keep your vehicle or schedule an appointment with you for a later date to fit into their regular service schedule.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR REPAIRS TO YOUR VEHICLE FOR THIS PARTICULAR CONDITION?
If you have already paid for a repair that is within the scope of this defect under recall, you still need to have this recall inspected and/or performed to ensure the correct parts and procedures were utilized.
Additionally, you may be eligible for a refund of previously paid repairs. Refunds will only be provided for within the scope of this defect under recall.

Forest River has decided that a safety defect exists in certain 2023 Pause Travel Trailer Recreational Vehicles. Forest River is recalling the defect model(s) to ensure the safety of our future retail consumers and your dealership. On March 22, 2023, Forest Rivers Office of Corporate Compliance (“OCC”) was advised that on certain models built at one manufacturing plant, the breakaway switch was not wired correctly. The concern was discovered during a routine Standards Audit of the manufacturing process. The same day, OCC and the manufacturing plant was able to determine all vehicles affected. On March 24, 2023, Forest Rivers Corporate Recall Committee voted to recall. On April 4, 2023, Pause Manufacturing plants’ manager contacted OCC stating that the Puma name is incorrectly stated. The vehicle is a Forest River Inc. Pause travel trailer. Amending to remove “Puma” from the 573 report.
