Summary
Lakota Corporation (Lakota) is recalling certain 2019-2023 Bighorn trailers. The trey ceiling above the bed may not have been installed correctly and may detach.
Remedy
Lakota will provide repair instructions and have screws installed in the trey ceiling, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 27, 2023. Owners may contact Lakota customer service at 1-574-848-1636. Lakota’s number for this recall is Trey Ceiling.

Bighorn Trey Ceiling Recall Repair Instructions
Tools / Hardware needed:
a. Drill with 3/8” Drill Bit.
b. Screw Gun with #2 Square Bit.
c. Six – 4” Screws
d. Six Wood Buttons (Color based on trailer décor)
1) Find center of front and rear angled cove moldings and mark locations.
2) Find center of each side angled cove moldings.
Measure forward and back 6” from center and mark locations.
3) Drill 3/8” holes in flat area of angled cove moldings.
(Use drop cloth or container to catch wood shavings)
4) Install 4” screw into each of the 6 holes to secure trey ceiling to structure.
5) Glue wood buttons into the drilled 3/8” holes.
Chronology :
A customer reported his trey ceiling had fallen in his Bighorn on 2/8/2023. After investigating, speaking to production personnel, and examining the photo the customer provided, it was found that the install process had been changed and did not include screws between October 2018 and November 2022. The lack of screws posses a safety risk and Lakota wants screws added to the trey ceilings in all trailers that do not have them.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Lakota Trailers has decided a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Lakota Bighorn 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023 models with a trey ceiling in the gooseneck. The trey ceiling may not be properly installed, allowing it to come free and fall. This may result in injury or death.
Lakota will reinforce the trey ceiling with screws, free of charge for parts and labor.
Due to this potential condition, Lakota is asking you do not use the gooseneck area of the trailer until the recall correction has been completed.
Please contact your Lakota dealer or nearest repair facility as soon as possible to arrange a service date so they may order the necessary materials for the repair of your trailer. Instructions for the correction have been sent to your dealer and the material is available. The labor time to perform this service correction is up to one hour.
Your Lakota dealer is best equipped to obtain parts and provide service to ensure your vehicle is corrected as promptly as possible. If; however, there is not a Lakota dealer in your area or you take your vehicle to your dealer on the agreed service date and they do not remedy this condition on that date or within three (3) business days, we recommend you contact Lakota Customer Service at (574)848-1636.
After contacting your dealer and Lakota Customer Service, if you are still not able to have the safety defect remedied without charge and within a reasonable time, you may wish to write the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, S.E., Washington, DC 20590 or call 1-888-327-4236 (TTY:1-800-424-9153); or go http://www.safercar.gov.
If you had this repair performed prior to receiving this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of this problem associated with this recall. For information contact Lakota Customer Service at: (574) 848-1636.
Federal law requires any lessor who receives a notification of a determination of safety-related defect or noncompliance pertaining to any leased motor vehicle shall send the notice to the lessee within 10 days.

Descriptive Information : On 2/8/2023 a customer reported the trey ceiling portion of the ceiling in the gooseneck over their bed had fallen. After investigating and speaking with producction staff it was determined when we began installing trey ceilings in 2017 they were pin nailed and screwed into place. In October 2018 an employee used pin nails and glue and failed to include screws in installation process.
The recalled trailers do not have screws included in the installation process. We are currently working to determine the number of trailers affected. We will provide that number as soon as possible.

Trey ceilings were introduced in 2017 and were pin nailed and screwed into place. In October 2018 the installation location on the production line was moved and changed and the trey ceiling was installed using glue and pin nails and not screws. The cabinet shop group leader changed the process in November 2022 when he found one trey ceiling was not fitting correct, so he added the screws back into the process in addition to the pin nails and glue.
