Summary
Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Solis, 2021-2023 Travato, and 2022-2023 Ekko motorhomes, equipped with certain Suburban Manufacturing Company (Suburban) SDS2 2-Burner Drop-in Cooktops with part number 3032AST. The internal aluminum burner tubes that connect to the gas valves may fracture and cause a gas leak.
Remedy
Winnebago will work with Suburban to repair the cooktop, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 31, 2023. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-6939 or 1-800-537-1885.

Reason for this Safety Recall
Winnebago Motorhomes has been made aware of an issue where in some cases, certain Suburban Manufacturing Company (Suburban) SDS2 2-Burner Drop-in cook tops with part number 3032AST, may have internal aluminum burner tubes that connect to the gas valves fracture and cause a gas leak.
A gas leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire
Service Action
Winnebago and Suburban will conduct a voluntary safety recall to address this cook top, however the remedy is not currently available. Dealers will be notified through established communication methods once a remedy is available.
In the interim, all systems in the coach can be functionally demonstrated.
Chronology :
In or about March, 2022, Thor’s VSRC Office contacted Winnebago to request information concerning any “high volume or irregular pattern of warranty claims” with the SDS2 cooktop. Winnebago reviewed warranty data and did not identify any high volume or irregular patterns with SDS2 warranty claims; this was reported back to Thor’s VSRC Office;
In or about April 2022, Winnebago identified social media posts from a customer referring to a cooktop concern,
In or about April 2022, Winnebago opened an investigation. As part of the investigation a new data analysis was initiated. The April 2022 investigation did not find any unreasonable risk to safety:
April 28, 2022, Suburban Manufacturing Co. issued recall 22E-035 specifically for Escape RV; Winnebago was not notified of this recall;
In or about August 2022, investigation reviews installation records from Winnebago assembly technicians and found no concern;
October 2022, Winnebago identified a social media post where a consumer had identified a propane gas leak on a Suburban SDS2 cook top which appeared to be consistent with issue described in 22E-035 recall.
Winnebago attempted to get the suspect part returned, but was not able to do so. ;
In or about January 2023, Winnebago continued to search for and analyzed any claim or complaint concerning SDS2 cooktops;
In or about the middle of January 2023, a new data analysis was completed and five (5) total potentially related claims were identified. The claims ranged from late November 2020 to early April 2022. These claims were sent to Suburban for their review on January 18, 2022.
January 26, 2023 Suburban sent Winnebago notice that Winnebago was impacted by 22E-035 and Winnebago made a decision to file a recall for the Suburban Recall 23E-0020 as that appeared to be the correct recall number.;
February 2, 2023, after working with Suburban Manufacturing Company to determine scope of impacted units, Winnebago filed a notice of defect with NHTSA.

crack resulting a leak of propane when the top burner gas valve is opened to use the appliance. If ignited the propane could result in a fire and/or explosion which could result in personal injury.”
Description of the Cause : According to Suburban Manufacturing Company, “[t]he gas manifold at the control knobs can become loose over time due to excessive vibration. With excessive [vibration] the burner tubes can fail. Lab analysis of failed burner tubes indicate hardening of the aluminum burner tubes likely caused by repeated impact or the excessive vibration.” Identification of Any Warning

Description of the Defect : According to Suburban Manufacturing Company, “the internal aluminum burner tubes connecting the gas valves to the cook top burners can fracture from excessive vibration or shock experienced through RV travel.”

Description of the Safety Risk : According to Suburban Manufacturing Company, “the burner tube could crack resulting a leak of propane when the top burner gas valve is opened to use the appliance. If ignited the propane could result in a fire and/or explosion which could result in personal injury.”
Description of the Cause : According to Suburban Manufacturing Company, “the gas manifold at the control knobs can become loose over time due to excessive vibration. With excessive vibration the burner tubes can fail. Lab analysis of failed burner tubes indicate hardening of the aluminum burner tubes likely caused by repeated impact or the excessive vibration.” Identification of Any Warning
that can Occur : According to Suburban Manufacturing Company, “the operator could possibly hear a louder than normal hissing sound or smell propane odor when the cooktop gas valve is turned to the ‘on’ position. In or about March, 2022, Thor’s VSRC Office contacted Winnebago to request information concerning any “high The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-049 Page 3 volume or irregular pattern of warranty claims” with the SDS2 cooktop. Winnebago reviewed warranty data and did not identify any high volume or irregular patterns with SDS2 warranty claims; this was reported back to Thor’s VSRC Office; In or about April 2022, Winnebago identified social media posts from a customer referring to a cooktop concern, In or about April 2022, Winnebago opened an investigation. As part of the investigation a new data analysis was initiated. The April 2022 investigation did not find any unreasonable risk to safety: April 28, 2022, Suburban Manufacturing Co. issued recall 22E-035 specifically for Escape RV; Winnebago was not notified of this recall; In or about August 2022, investigation reviews installation records from Winnebago assembly technicians and found no concern; October 2022, Winnebago identified a social media post where a consumer had identified a propane gas leak on a Suburban SDS2 cook top which appeared to be consistent with issue described in 22E-035 recall.
Winnebago attempted to get the suspect part returned, but was not able to do so. ; In or about January 2023, Winnebago continued to search for and analyzed any claim or complaint concerning SDS2 cooktops; In or about the middle of January 2023, a new data analysis was completed and five (5) total potentially related claims were identified. The claims ranged from late November 2020 to early April 2022. These claims were sent to Suburban for their review on January 18, 2022. January 26, 2023 Suburban sent Winnebago notice that Winnebago was impacted by 22E-035 and Winnebago made a decision to file a recall for the Suburban Recall 23E-0020 as that appeared to be the correct recall number.; February 2, 2023, after working with Suburban Manufacturing Company to determine scope of impacted units, Winnebago filed a notice of defect with NHTSA. Description of Remedy Program : According to Suburban Manufacturing Company’s Defect Information
Report for 23E-0020, the remedy is still being evaluated at this time. Suburban Manufacturing Company will remedy the issue at no charge to the customer. Reimbursement requests will follow the General Reimbursement Plan on file with NHTSA.
