Mirror May Detach and Become Road Hazard
A molded hood mirror that falls into the roadway can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Peterbilt 579 vehicles. The molded hood mirror assemblies may break at the pivot joint and, if unsecured by a harness or tether, can fall into the roadway.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect for a wire harness or tether and replace the hood mirror assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 14, 2023. Owners may contact Peterbilt’s customer service at 1-940-591-4220. PACCAR’s number for this recall is 22PBF.

Safety Recall – A mirror with a pivot joint break that does not have a wire harness or tether can result in foreign object debris on the roadway increasing the risk of a crash and/or injury.
Introduction
Certain model 579 MLU trucks equipped with molded hood mirrors may experience a mirror pivot-joint failure. Within that population of trucks, there are mirrors that do not have a wire harness or tether to keep the upper half of the mirror with the truck if the pivot joint fails.

2,995 (2,565 US and 430 CAN) model 579 MLU MY 2022-2023 with molded hood mirror.

11-16-2022 Engineering warranty group provided updated warranty claims. Engineering provided details on pivot joint failures and corrective actions at the supplier.
11-17-2022 Engineering forwarded Safety & Compliance questions on to the supplier.
11-21-2022 Supplier answered questions Safety & Compliance had.
11-22-2022 Safety Committee reviewed investigation. They requested that the mirror build dates and failures be compared to determine if the failure rate varied throughout the suspect time frame.
11-23-2022 Customer service group provided US/Canada registry for suspect chassis list.
11-30-2022 Met with supplier to review warranty claims and returned parts to help determine how each failed and whether they had a wire harness or tether. 58 warranty claims out of 28,734 mirrors built for a 0.2% failure rate.
12-13-2022: Safety Committee determines a safety related defect exists.
As of 12-13-2022, PACCAR received 77 warranty claims and 1 report about 3 trucks in the field that may be related between January 2021 and December 2022. Zero reports of deaths or injuries have been received.

These hood mirrors may experience a pivot joint failure resulting In foreign object debris on the roadway, Increasing the risk of a crash and/or injury. MY22- 23 model 579 MLU Molded Hood Mirror assemblies built without a wire harness or tether may experience a mirror pivot joint failure. Inspect optional, molded, hood mirrors for presence of wire harness or tether.
