November 18, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V852000
Overheated components can increase the risk of a fire.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V852
Manufacturer E-One Incorporated
Components ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Potential Number of Units Affected 8
Summary
E-One Incorporated (E-One) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Cyclone 2 and 2020-2021 Typhoon N emergency vehicles. Exhaust heat may build up inside the vehicle body in certain situations such as heavy engine use, possibly causing nearby components to overheat.
Remedy
Dealers will add an opening to the body top and install a protective grate, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 12, 2022. Owners may contact E-One customer service at 1-352-237-1122.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
WHY IS A RECALL BEING CONDUCTED?
The design of the body on the subject trucks could allow the exhaust heat to be contained during periods of heavy use. Thermally sensitive components may become deformed, melt or catch fire. Melted wire loom and/or discolorations/distortions on plastic tanks may precede the failure. Excessive heat is contained in or around the exhaust stack because it is enclosed in the body with no ventilation.
The affected item is the Vertical Exhaust System, Exhaust Heat May Cause Fire.
WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM?
Owners will be notified by mail about the recall and will be instructed that an opening will be added to the body top to let the heat out and a protective grate will be added over the opening. The repair will take approximately two (2) hours.
E-ONE will provide the necessary components free of charge. E-ONE will compensate the Dealer or Owner for installing the new components. There is no charge to the Dealer or the Owner for this Recall.
Vehicles subject to this recall are to be inspected and repaired by an E-ONE certified dealer or technician.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
If you receive this notification, please contact your E-ONE Dealer or E-ONE at 1-352-237-1122 to schedule an appointment to have the repairs performed.
INCLUDED WITH THIS LETTER IS AN OWNER RESPONSE CARD THAT MUST BE FILLED OUT AND RETURNED TO E-ONE IN ORDER TO BE REIMBURSED. Please have your Truck VIN available. After your repair has been completed, please fill in the appropriate information on the enclosed Owner Response Postcard, sign it, and mail it to:
E-ONE, 1601 SW 37th Ave, Ocala, FL, 34474.
If you prefer to contact E-ONE directly, feel free to contact our Customer Service at 1-352-237-1122. Please have your Truck VIN available.
Install Instructions – Aerial Exhaust Vent Plate
Tools Required:
- Drill bit –1/4
- Marker
- Handheld cutoff wheel
- Handheld sander and/or handheld angle grinder
Parts Required:
- 14”x14” Exhaust Vent Plate
- STAINLESS STEEL TRUSS TORX SCREW 0.25-20 X 0.75, QTY: 8
- STAINLESS STEEL NUT 0.25-20 SS HEX LOCK, QTY: 8
- STAINLESS STEEL WASHER 0.25 FLAT, QTY: 16
Installation Steps:
1. Raise the aerial device and raise the cab.
2. Locate the exhaust muffler and outlet pipe on the vehicle. It will be located at the front of the body, on the officer’s side, behind the cab.
3. Locate the exhaust access plate on the officer’s side of the vehicle. Remove the access plate.
4. Locate the exhaust U-bend at the top of the muffler. The supplied vent plate will be installed above this exhaust component. An approximate location for the plate is shown below.
5. Remove the top deck plate above the exhaust U-bend.
6. Place vent plate on top of the top deck plate that was removed. Use a marker to mark the location of the eight ¼” holes in the vent plate onto this plate. Use a marker to draw an outline of the vent plate on the top deck plate. The outline should be 14” x 14”.
7. Match-drill the eight marked holes with a ¼” drill bit.
8. Set the vent plate aside. Use a straight-edge to draw a square that is 1” narrower on all sides than the square outlined earlier. This smaller square should be 12” x 12”.
9. Use a cut-off wheel to cutout the 12” x 12” square from the top deck plate. Use a handheld sander and angle grinder to deburr the sharp edges of the cutout.
10. Place vent plate on top of the top deck plate and fasten the two together using the ¼” hardware. Reinstall the top deck plate in its original location.
Chronology :
In late August, E-ONE had a custom aerial in the test process that was required to repeat the same tests multiple times. Near the end of these repeated tests (8+ hours of essentially full engine load) it was identified that a few plastic type items experienced thermal softening effect. An investigation at the testing site concluded that we needed to reject more of the heat created by the exhaust assembly. Due to the custom nature of the product, research was done to determine how many trucks might be affected with similar designs. Thirteen (13) units were identified.
On 9/15/2022 the issue was presented to the E-ONE Product Performance Committee. The committee decided that to understand if this was unusual event, or not, three subject trucks would be inspected in the field to see if they had any thermal softening of components. During inspections no affected assemblies were found.
On 10/13/2022 the results of the field units were discussed with the E-ONE Product Performance Committee. It was determined to add the vent to related vehicles out of an abundance of caution.
On 11/15/2022 REV Group gave approval to proceed with the Recall.
