Workshop installation guide "Installing heated grips" not yet available in AIR.
Installation instructions have been modified due to updated wiring harness routing and arrangement.

PROCEDURE
These documents will be added to AIR in the fall of 2021. In the meantime, please use the attached
instructions appropriate for the model of motorcycle being retrofitted.

77 22 185 Installing heated handlebar grips

Preparatory work
Removing and installing the rear-wheel stand special tool
(motorcycles without centre stand) (Description in item:
46 52 510, Billed as a separate item)
Removing seat
Removing cover for left intake snorkel
Removing the cover for right intake snorkel
Removing cover for fuel tank
Removing right radiator cowl
Removing top front-wheel cover
Removing front mask with windscreen
Removing headlight
Remove the left handlebar weight
Remove the right handlebar weight

Removing throttle grip unit
Information for disconnecting vibration-resistant connectors

ATTENTION
Disconnection of the connector not in compliance with
correct procedure
Damage to locking tab
Push the connector away from the locking tab, do not
lift or bend the locking tab.
Unlock locking tab (1) in direction of arrow (Arrow 1).
Press down locking tab (1) in direction of arrow (arrow
2) and disconnect connector (2).

Remove cable straps (arrows).
Remove tensioning strap (1).
Disconnect connector (2).
Disconnect connector (3) from holder (4) and work
cable (5) for throttle grip unit clear to the top.

Loosen bolt (1).
Pull off throttle grip unit (2) from handlebars (3).

Installing new throttle grip unit

WARNING
Steering angle constrained by routing of cables
or Bowden cables not in compliance with correct
procedure.
Impairment of road safety.
Check the freedom of movement of the handlebars.
Slide on new throttle grip unit (1) up to multifunction
switch (2) on handlebars (3).
Select position of throttle grip unit (1) making sure that
cable (4) is not bent by multifunction switch (2).
Tighten screw (5).

Route cable for throttle grip unit (1) and cable for grip
heating (2) and work down.
Install tensioning strap (3).
Ensure freedom of movement of cable for grip heating (2) with operation of throttle grip (4).

Information for connecting vibration-resistant
connectors
Check if the contact carrier (1) protrudes significantly
from the connector housing (2).
If necessary, hold down the connector housing (2) and
slide contact carrier from the rear at the cable inlet (3)
toward the front until the contact carrier (1) is visible

Ensure that the release tab (1) is unlocked.
Slide connector (2) in direction of arrow (arrow 1).
The connector (2) engages audibly.
Slide connector (2) in direction of arrow (arrow 2) further.
The connector (2) engages audibly.
Slide locking tab (1) in direction of arrow (arrow 3).
The locking tab (1) engages audibly.

Route cable for throttle grip unit (1).
Secure connector (2) on holder (3).
Connect connector (4).
Close the cable strap (arrows).

Removing left handlebar grip
Lift the edge of handlebar grip (1) (Arrow), spray brake
cleaner and spread it under handlebar grip (1) with
compressed air.
Cleaner
Brake cleaner

Pull off handlebar grip (1).

Removing left multifunction switch
Remove screws (1).

Separate housing halves of multifunction switch (1), noting the lug (arrow).
Loosen multifunction switch (1) and let it hang from the
cable.

Preparing handlebars for grip heating, left
Slide rubber grommet (1) up.
Loosen lock nut (2) and loosen mirror (3).
Insert drilling template (32 1 531) with retaining pin
into multifunction switch bore hole (Arrow) and clamp
tight.
Drill through drill sleeve (4) through handlebars from top
and bottom and remove swarf several times from drill
sleeve (4).

Remove drilling template (32 1 531).
Secure mirror (3) with lock nut (2) and push rubber
grommet (1) on.
Tightening torques
Left mirror (lock nut) to adapter
M10 x 1.25

Secure multifunction switch, left
Hold multifunction switch (1) in position.
Join housing halves of multifunction switch (1), making
sure that the lug (arrow) engages the hole in the handlebar.

Install screws (1).

Installing the left heated grip
Push on heated grip (1).
Bend rubber grip (Arrow) up on the inner edge.
Install screws (2) at top and bottom up to the equipment.
Tightening torques
Heated grip to handlebars
M4 x 10, thread-tapping

2 Nm

Inserting heated grip switch in holder
Work cable (1) for heated grip switch (2) through
holder (3).
Clip in heated grip switch (2) in holder (3). Switch engages audibly.

Installing the switch for grip heating
Remove bolt (1).
Lubricate and install bolts (2).
Tightening torques
Handlebar to handlebar clamp
M8 x 30

19 Nm

Lubricant
MP 3 paste

Replace bolt (3) in the same way by a bolt (2).
Position switch (1) and install with screws (2).

Installing the switch for grip heating
Remove screws (3).
Release holder for navigation system (1) from bolts (2).

Position switches for grip heating (1) and holder for
navigation system (2) with washers (3) on handlebar
clamping block (4).
Install screws (5).

Routing the cable from the left heated grip
and connector

WARNING
Steering angle constrained by routing of cables
or Bowden cables not in compliance with correct
procedure.
Impairment of road safety.
Check the freedom of movement of the handlebars.
Work cable (1) for left heated grip and cable (2) for
heated grip switch down.
Secure cable (1) for left heated grip with tensioning
belt (3).
Work cable (2) for heated grip switch with opening (4)
through front panel carrier (5) to the front.
Secure the cable strap (arrow).

Exposing connector
Remove cable strap (arrow).
Exposing connector (1) or connector (2) for power supply.

Remove blind cap (1) from connector (2).
Secure remaining connector for power supply (3) again
with cable strap (Arrow) on front panel carrier (4).

Installing the relay box with the wiring harness

WARNING
Steering angle constrained by routing of cables
or Bowden cables not in compliance with correct
procedure.
Impairment of road safety.
Check the freedom of movement of the handlebars.

Connect relay box (1) on rear side of control unit (2) to
support (3) for control unit.
Route wiring harness (4) for relay box to the front and
secure with cable strap (Arrow).

Routing cable and connecting connector
Route wiring harness (1) for relay box on frame (2) and
front panel carrier (3) to the front
Secure the cable strap (arrow).

Route wiring harness (1) for relay box, except cable (2)
with connector (3) and (4) for heated grips, through
opening in front panel carrier (5) to the front.
Connect connectors (3) and (4) for heated grips and
position together with wiring harness (1) for relay box
and cable (6) for heated grip switch on front panel carrier (5).
Secure the cable strap (arrow).

Secure cable strap (Arrow) on frame (1).

Connect connector for heated grip switch (1). Lay excess cable length in loops.
Connect connector for power supply (2).
Connect connector for optional accessories (3) (with
blind cap).
Secure plug connections with cable strap (Arrow).
