Component Description: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Recall Campaign: 13V569
Summary Description: Partial Loss of Exterior Lights
Summary
Volkswagen Group of America (VW
) is conducting a safety recall of approximately 62,155 model year (MY) 2009-2011 Volkswagen
Tiguan vehicles to address a partial loss of the exterior lighting (see NHTSA recall 13V-569 for more information). These vehicles' exterior lighting system is protected by two separate fuses contained in a fuse box located in the engine compartment.According to VW
, high thermal cycling and soft-coated fuse coating material used at the F16 (also referred to as SB16) location causes movement between the fuse blade and socket, resulting in abrasions on the fuse coating material. This increases resistance and results in overheating of the fuse and disruption of electrical current flow to roughly half of the vehicle's exterior lighting circuits. Examples include loss of one of each of the following: low beam headlight, high beam headlight, brake light, and turn signal light involving the front and rear of the vehicle.VW
has stated that the subject F16 fuse in the Tiguan model was used in several other Volkswagen
models.According to VW
, the temperature of the vehicle's engine and the fuse box varies by vehicle model.ODI found that the complaint and warranty rates for the MY 2009-2010 Tiguan are more than four times greater than that of MY 2009-2010 Volkswagen
Jetta sedans.ODI is aware of VW
's plan to take a service action of some, but not all, of the other vehicle models. The action will cover MY 2009-2010 Jetta sedan and MY 2009 GTI vehicles.ODI will monitor complaints to NHTSA on all other Volkswagen
models equipped with the same subject fuse and take further action if warranted.The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers: 10362206, 10471503, 10490408, 10501271, 10504495, 10508638, 10512642, 10520573, 10521147, 10522909, 10523748, 10526032, 10534679, 10538004, 10538410, 10543629, 10544805, 10545540, 10547334, 10547530, 10547775, 10549584, 10550140, 10550903, 10551486, 10551503, 10551538, 10551776, 10551816, 10551848, 10551853, 10552153, 10552322, 10552740, 10552811, 10552866, 10553122, 10553299, 10554352, 10554441, 10554443, 10554730, 10554890, 10555047, 10555080, 10555527, 10555540, 10555988, 10556475, 10558014, 10559441, 10559447, 10561642, 10562693.

US, LLC)
Component Description: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Summary Description: Jeep Liberty Door Fires
Summary
The driver's side power master window switch (PMWS) evaluted during this investigation controls the power windows for all four doors, the power mirrors and door locks. The PMWS is located on the driver's side door panel.Chrysler advised that the PMWS was used on multiple vehicle platforms including model year (MY) 2011 Dodge
Nitro, MY 2011-2012 Jeep
Liberty and MY 2011 Chrysler
Town & Country and Dodge
Caravan for a total of approximately 425,000 vehicles. At the opening of the investigation, ODI identified two reports of fire near the vicinity of the PMWS on MY 2012 Jeep
Liberty Vehicles.During the course of the investigation, ODI determined that one of the complaint fires was not likely caused by a PMWS failure as available evidence indicated the fire started in the dashboard as opposed to the door panel area.Accordingly, the report was removed from the above counts. In response to ODI's October 30, 2013 information request (IR) letter, Chrysler
advised that it was only aware of the same two fire reports as ODI and that it had concluded one of the reports did not involve a PMWS failure.ODI has not identified any new subject vehicle reports involving PMWS fires during the course of the investigation. In addition to the reports alleging fire, ODI evaluated other reports and data related to PMWS failures including consumer complaints, field reports, law suits, and warranty claims provided by Chrysler
in its response.ODI interviewed owners of complaint vehicles when additional information was required. In addition to the subject Jeep
Liberty, ODI reports for the additional Chrysler
vehicles that use the same PMWS were also reviewed.ODI identified two additional ODI complaints (see ODI 10523317 and 10474901) involving Chrysler
minivans that alleged door fires that were, or may have been related to a PMWS failure. In discussions with ODI, Chrysler
stated that it conducted a search for consumer complaints alleging PMWS related door fires on the additional vehicles that use the same PMWS but did not identify any responsive reports.Based on ODI's assessment of available data, the overall failure rate for the PMWS, which was used in a large population of vehicles, appears to be low, and the failure rate for those that resulted in fires is even lower.Additionally the data does not indicate a trend, climatic, or regional effects indicative of an actionable defect issue.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances. The ODI report cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers: 10459029

Component Description: VISIBILITY:SUN/MOON ROOF ASSEMBLY
Summary Description: Panoramic Sunroof Breakage
Summary
On October 21, 2013 the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE13-035 in order to further examine claims that the sunroof would spontaneously break on 2011-2013 Kia Sorento vehicles. The majority of these claims occurred while the vehicle was in motion.Glass shattering while driving may distract the driver, and the resulting glass particles which enter the passenger compartment may injure occupants. To date, ODI has received a total of 26 reports of sunroof breakage on the subject vehicles. Of those, 24 occurred while the vehicle was in motion. There were also four (4) injury incident reports for minor cuts/scratches. Kia
submitted a total of 123 field incidents related to sunroof breakage in response to ODI's information request. Of this number, ODI identified 78 unique vehicle identification numbers (VINs), with 9 matching ODI complaint vehicles.Sixty of the submitted reports occurred while the vehicle was in motion.Fourteen (14) of the submitted reports alleged minor cuts/scratches from falling glass.Kia
also submitted a total of 101 warranty and goodwill claims for sunroof replacement, of which 86 unique VINs were identified.Kia
stated in its response that their field inspections identified only one potential cause for the sunroof breakage - external impacts from rocks or other foreign objects encountered while the vehicle was in motion. In the other instances, no evidence of a defect was found, however, Kia
's inspection results were inconclusive as to a cause for the breakage.Kia
advises that the Sorento sunroofs also have a greater surface area than many other vehicles, potentially making them more susceptible to road debris strikes. While ODI recognizes that the Sorento may be more at risk due to its larger impact area, the rate of ODI reported incidents is concerning. Thus, the investigation has been upgraded toan Engineering Analysis (EA14-002) to further analyze the scope, frequency, and consequence of these failures. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification (ODI) numbers: 10345933, 10410440, 10432904, 10453957, 10466987, 10478778, 10492886, 10502219, 10508983, 10514388, 10531972, 10534883, 10553341, 10555931, 10556212, 10562460, 10562516, 10563779, 10564555, 10567351, 10568629, 10572959, 10575487, 10583122, 10583626, 10584650

Component Description: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
Recall Campaign: 13V489
Summary Description: Brake hydraulic control module failure
Summary
On October 28, 2013, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai
) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a safety defect in the braking system of approximately 43,500 model year (MY) 2009 through 2012 Hyundai
Genesis
sedans (NHTSA Recall No. 13V-489).The Hyundai
report indicates that the recalled vehicles may contain brake fluid
that does not sufficiently inhibit corrosion on the zinc plating of control valve armatures in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module. The DIR indicated that, over time, the build-up of corrosion products may affect operation of HECU control valves, resulting in a low/soft brake pedal with reduced brake effectiveness, which may increase the risk of a crash. In October 2011, the HECU supplier notified Hyundai
that the brake fluid
used in production plants was causing corrosion of valve armatures in the control module. The supplier changed the coating of the valve armatures in late March 2012 to correct the problem in production vehicles.Hyundai
's recall includes Genesis
vehicles produced prior to the implementation of the HECU change. In March 2013, Hyundai
initiated a Service Campaign (TL6) to replace brake fluid
in the subject vehicles with brake fluid
with better corrosion resistance properties.According to Hyundai
's DIR letter, after PE13-033 was opened, the company noted that some of the vehicles serviced in the TL6 campaign subsequently required HECU replacement. This was an indication that internal corrosion had progressed enough to affect valve operation and brake performance, prompting Hyundai
to conduct a safety recall.Hyundai
's repair procedures for 13V-489 require brake system flushing and replacement in all recalled vehicles with a new fluid containing the necessary corrosion inhibitor. In addition, for vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, dealers will perform an inspection procedure to verify that the HECU is functioning properly and replace units that do not meet the test requirements.Hyundai
indicated that, based on analysis of claim data, only vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010 have been in service long enough to require the additional inspection/replacement of the HECU. Analysis of failure data reported to NHTSA and provided by Hyundai
in response to ODI's information request letter for PE13-033 identified 756 complaints and 1,683 warranty claims for 30,114 subject vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, resulting in a complaint rate of 25.1 incidents per thousand vehicles (IPTV) and a claim rate of 5.6 percent. The MY 2009 vehicles, with the longest exposure times, experienced the highest complaint (33.5 IPTV) and warranty (7.0 percent) rates. For the 45,639 subject vehicles produced after June 1, 2010, ODI identified 13 complaints and 34 warranty claims, resulting in a complaint rate of 0.3 IPTV and a warranty claim rate of 0.1 percent, indicating that the brake fluid
corrosion concern had not progressed far enough to result in significant rates of brake system performance symptoms in those vehicles. This investigation is closed.ODI will continue to monitor complaints to evaluate the effectiveness of Hyundai
's recall.The VOQs noted in the Failure Report are: 10569231, 10560898, 10560495, 10559360, 10558279, 10558264, 10556964, 10556631, 10556577, 10556322, 10554988, 10554802, 10554122, 10552958, 10551817, 10551157, 10551110, 10551092, 10550791, 10550773, 10550431, 10549750, 10549634, 10549629, 10549567, 10549402, 10549376, 10549270, 10549228, 10549186, 10549021, 10548903, 10548823, 10548791, 10548737, 10548722, 10548716, 10548705, 10546565, 10544803, 10543663, 10542962, 10541959, 10541741, 10538208, 10537934, 10536652, 105354

Manufacturer’s Name: CORNHUSKER 800
Component Description: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
Summary Description: Trailer Structural Cracks
Summary
This investigation was open based on information ODI received through Early Warning Reporting. After gathering data, interviewing fleets and analyzing the available information ODI has not identified a safety defect trend. In response to an ODI request, Cornhusker reported 36 warranty claims related to the alleged defect.None of the claims resulted in a loss of vehicle control. In all cases the driver identified the component failure and placed the vehicle out of service without incident.ODI was concerned that a structural member failure would allow the trailer to separate or to drop down and contact the drive tires and increase the risk of a crash. However, no reports of these conditions were received. ODI also requested fleet contact information and spoke with five fleets. When asked if this condition created a safety risk, none answered affirmatively. All responding fleets were easily able to identify the failure and get it corrected without injury or property damage.Cornhusker provided a finite element analysis (FEA) of the failure area that showed how the structural members were failing and explained that the area in question was ahead of the kingpin and centered in the middle of the trailer.Cornhusker stated that even in cases of extreme neglect and failure, the pin plate bowed up slightly, but showed no signs of the trailer separating or falling down on the tractor driving wheels. In comparing the failure mode on the trailers subject of this investigation with trailers that have been recalled for similar failure modes, ODI found that in recall 06V-336 from Wilson Trailer Co. the area in question was behind the kingpin and to the side where the assembly attaches to the trailer bottom rail. When structure in this area fails, the trailer could fall down and contact the driving wheels on the tractor causing loss of vehicle control.ODI found that the average in-service time to failure was 34 months, with 93% of failures occurring prior to 4 years of service. At this time, the majority of trailers (77%) have already passed this milestone.Cornhusker has been requested to notify ODI of any additional failures which occur prior to March 31, 2015 at which point all of the subject trailers will have reached 4 years in service.ODI is not aware of any allegations of subject trailers becoming detached or contacting the drive wheels of the towing vehicle due to the alleged defect. There have been no reports of crash or loss of vehicle control related to the alleged defect. There have been no reports of property damage beyond the subject trailer and all affected trailers have been repaired and returned to service. There have been no reports of injury or death.A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
