Improperly Crimped Lifting Cable
An improperly crimped cable may come out of place during a lifting operation, possibly causing the generator set to fall, increasing the risk of injury.

Summary
Pierce Manufacturing (Pierce) is recalling one 2021 Arrow XT firetruck equipped with a Cummins generator set. The lifting cables may be improperly crimped.
Remedy
Cummins will inspect the lifting cable, and either replace the cable or install a warning label, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on October 8, 2021. Owners may contact Pierce’s customer service at 1-888-974-3723.

The generator sets are equipped with lifting cables to be used during product assembly, installation, service or removal. The ferrule on the genset lifting cable may have been improperly crimped by the supplier. If this condition exists, the lifting cable may pull out of the ferrule during lifting operation, which may cause the genset to fall during assembly, installation, service or removal, possibly resulting in personal injury. WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM? Cummins has released field Safety Campaign #4495 RBAB Lift Cable Crimp Issue to correct this condition by inspecting the lifting cable and, if defective, replacing it with a properly crimped lifting cable. Repair parts are currently available at Cummins Distributors and authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately 7 hours to complete. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? If the generator set must be lifted or moved, DO NOT use the lifting cable until it has been inspected as part of this campaign. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Pursuant to 49 CFR 577.11(e), Cummins requests that it be exempt from providing notification of a reimbursement plan. Any pre-notification product failure would have been addressed under the manufacturer’s limited warranty. Accordingly, no person would be eligible for reimbursement pursuant to 573.13. The remedy will involve inspecting the lifting cable crimping for adequacy and, if inadequate, providing a warning to use an alternate lifting method or replacing the lifting cable if required. Per NHTSA email April 6, 2022 to Pierce – Pierce is not able to provide the required recall quarterly completion reports. It will be Cummins who will be filing all recall quarterly completion reports. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The defective cable will either bear a conspicuous warning to use an alternate lifting method, or, if replaced, the new lifting cable will be properly crimped by the supplier. Dealers notified in September 2021 and Owners notified in October 2021. Pierce gave Cummins the owner information of the one affected Pierce truck and Cummins went to them direct.
