Software May Cause Unintentional Vehicle Movement

Summary

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. A software error in the park lock system may allow the vehicle to move after the gear selector has been placed in the Park ‘P’ position without the parking brake applied.

 

Remedy

Dealers will update the electronic stability program control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 11, 2022. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this recall is VS3PA27 ERI/ERO.

Update ESP control unit software

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch to update the ESP control unit software on approximately 3,301 MY19 Freightliner Sprinter vans.  The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.  All affected VINs will be flagged as “OPEN” in VMI and cannot be sold.

 

Issue

Mercedes-Benz AG(MBAG), the manufacturer of Freightliner Sprinter Vans became aware of customer complaints claiming a van had “rolled away” after the driver had selected gear position “P” (Park) and P was displayed in the instrument cluster. If the driver does not properly secure the vehicle in accordance with parking instructions in the Operator’s Manual, it is possible that the vehicle could roll from its parked position and therefore increase the risk of a crash.

 

What We’re Doing

DVUSA is conducting a voluntary recall. An authorized Freightliner Sprinter dealer will update the ESP control unit with a revised parameter set on the affected vans.

 

Remedy

The Software is available

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for a dealer to sell or lease any new Sprinter vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.

Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for rental companies to rent new Sprinter vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Vehicle Rolls Away While in Park

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened this PE after receiving 11 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging that Model Year (MY) 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500/3500/4500 vans, configured for use as Amazon delivery vehicles or ambulances, roll away shortly after being shifted to park using the Auto-P function. A rollaway vehicle with no operator behind the steering wheel could potentially strike pedestrians, moving or parked vehicles or buildings resulting in injury, fatality and/or property damage.

A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to further assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is available for purchase from Mercedes-Benz USA.

In order to use the J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the purchaser must furnish their own:

  • J2534 compliant interface box*1*

*Must be purchased from a third party company and are not available from Mercedes-Benz USA LLC.

Vehicle Coverage

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles has coverage for all required functions associated to reprogramming, initialization, and fault clearing of emission control modules (engine and transmission) fitted to vehicles 2004 Model Year and newer. Additionally all access and functionality required in regard the configuration via SCN Coding and/or CVN Coding is covered.

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is delivered via DVD media which is delivered monthly for the license term of one year upon purchase.

  • All control unit software (reprogramming calibrations) is contained within J2534 DVD media.

 

Terms and conditions

J2534 complaint software for Mercedes-Benz vehicles is purchased in 1-year license increments. During that license term the user will receive an initial software package, license key, SCN/CVN Coding information/access as well as monthly updates via DVD media.

  • Additional updates of software after the 1st year can be purchased at additional cost, however are not required for the system to continue functioning.
