Manufacturer Blue Bird Body Company

Components SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Potential Number of Units Affected 135

Summary

Blue Bird Body Company (Blue Bird) is recalling certain 2022 Vision school buses equipped with Ford 7.3L engines. The retaining clamp used to secure the hydraulic brake line near the engine may not have been installed, which could cause the brake line to rub which could cause a brake fluid leak and result in a loss of brake function.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect the hydraulic brakes lines, and install any missing hardware, free of charge. Owners letters were mailed on November 30, 2021. Owners may contact Blue Bird’s customer service at 1-478-822-2242. Blue Bird’s number for this recall is R21BN-SB.

Instructions: Repair A

  • Locate the left-hand front brake line, inside the frame rail, rear of the front motor mount.
  • Inspect for a “P” clamp (Item #53) securing the hydraulic brake line to the frame rail at the grounding strap.
  • If the clamp is installed, tight and positioned per Illustration 1, no further action is necessary.
  • If the clamp is missing or incorrectly installed, proceed to the next step.
  • Locate the mounting fastener for the engine ground Remove the locking nut securing ground strap to chassis and discard the nut.

NOTE – Ensure the surfaces between the frame rail and ground strap are clean and free of paint or corrosion prior to proceeding.

  • Install P-Clamp 02024370 (Item 53) over brake line, oriented in a downward position, with the flat side of the P-Clamp against the frame rail.
  • Insert capscrew and washer (Items 26 & 27) thru the P-Clamp, ground strap and frame rail.

  • Install new locknut (Item 24) onto the capscrew on the outside of the frame rail.
  • While ensuring the ground strap and P-Clamp are properly positioned, tighten the lock nut and torque to 30 ft-lbs.

IMPORTANT: The stack of components is critical. Proper sequence is frame, ground strap then P-Clamp Do not install P-Clamp between frame and ground strap.

  • Perform a visual inspection to ensure the hydraulic line is not rubbing any This includes items such as the chassis frame, mounting brackets, fuel, air or electrical lines/harnesses.

Instructions: Repair B

  • Repair B includes the replacement of the hydraulic line (if required) in addition to Repair A .

Chronology :

On June 25, 2021, an issue with a failed hydraulic brake line was reported on a BBCV 7.3L unit during delivery to the dealer. That same day, an on-site inspection was completed and it was determined that several in process units were missing the brake line retaining clamp near the engine. A stop ship was issued to contain and rework all in process units, as well as, any units that were RFD but not delivered. Training for all operators and inspectors responsible for the affected components was completed on June 29, 2021. This issue was reported to the Blue Bird Critical Issue Review Group (CIRG). The CIRG team completed investigation of this issue and concluded that the prescribed corrective action was effective and noted that there were no additional field reports due to this issue. The CIRG team presented this issue to Blue Bird’s Product Safety Committee on October 1, 2021 where it was approved to conduct a voluntary safety recall to correct this potential issue.
