Summary

Safety Belt Solutions Ltd. (Safety Belt Solutions) is recalling certain seat belts with part number 202441-1/MFG 35FB9. The seat belt tongues may not have been heat-treated correctly during manufacturing. As such, these seat belts fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 209, “Seat Belt Assemblies.”

Remedy

Safety Belt Solutions will notify the manufacturer that purchased the equipment, and Safety Belt Solutions will test the seat belts, and replace them as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 14, 2021. Owners may contact Safety Belt Solutions customer service at +44 (0) 2393 079 064 (International number).

Subject: Safety Belt Solutions Ltd Seatbelt Recall Notice

 Mr. Khalik,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Belt Solutions Ltd (SBS) has decided that a noncompliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 209 exists in certain SBS seat belts, as identified below:

Amsafe Part Number: 202441-1 / MFG35FB9

Per communications in March and April: 

1. SBS is recalling all of the seat belts with Part Number as above, shipped to you under the following order numbers (the “affected belts”):

Our Order References: S09835, S010102, SO10146, SO10186 and SO09681

2. What could happen? The affected belts may not meet the tensile strength requirements of FMVSS The risk to motor vehicle safety related to this noncompliance is that the seat belt may not restrain a seated occupant in the event of a crash. Unrestrained occupants may be exposed to serious or fatal injury.

3. As a precaution, and in order to immediately address the risk to safety, SBS asked you to locate and quarantine the affected belts shipped to you, to keep them within your control, and not to allow them to leave your

4. What SBS has agreed to do? To ensure safety and your satisfaction with our product, we have arranged for the affected belts to be sent to our nominated facility in Michigan for

5. SBS promised that:

a. if the inspection and testing performed on our behalf by our nominated test facility, upon receipt of the affected seat belts, verifies that one or more seat belts tested is indeed not in compliance with FMVSS 209, we will send you replacement belts, free-of-charge.

i. SBS has manufactured and shipped sufficient seat belts to replace all non-conforming parts, and these parts are planned to be delivered within 14 days of the date of this letter.

b. Belts that are tested and found to be compliant, will be returned to you. (testing is not destructive.)

As of today:

1. SBS are retrieving from Amsafe and the one Amsafe customer 2992 of the 3000 affected belts.

2. Of the parts tested to date, circa 4% fall below the specified requirement.

3. We have agreed that both SBS and Amsafe will continue to try to locate/account for the 8 missing pieces.

4. You have indicated that you have informed your customer of the situation. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment covered by the notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.

5. SBS has dispatched to Amsafe, 440 belts to proactively cover the replacements cited in 5(a)(i).

You may submit a complaint to the Secretary of Transportation at the following address: Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590, or phone NHTSA’s toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-3274236 (TTY 1- 800-424-9153; or go to http://www.safercar.gov) if you believe that:

(A) SBS has failed or is unable to remedy the noncompliance without charge.

(B) SBS has failed or is unable to remedy the defect or noncompliance without charge within a reasonable time.

If you have had to replace any affected seat belt before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. For more information, contact the SBS at [email protected]
