RE: Customer communication regarding delayed quench issue
Dear XXX Customer:
Howmet Aerospace Inc.’s Howmet Wheel Systems business unit (HWS) has identified a thermal processing deviation with 11 wheels manufactured and heat treated in our Cleveland forge plant in late November 2020. You are receiving this letter because we believe you currently have or may have sold a truck or trailer containing one of these 11 wheels.
Our investigation of these 11 wheels is ongoing, but currently we believe these 11 wheels do not meet our tensile strength requirements due to a possible delay in quenching. There were additional wheels belonging to the same heat/lot number that were processed to specification.
Additionally, we have reviewed all process records for forgings processed immediately before and after this batch of wheels and have no reason to be concerned about any other wheels.
As you know, we have been working on containing these suspect wheels over the past 7 days with your assistance. We had shipped XXX wheels from the [affected] batch and have contained [] of these wheels to this date. We appreciate your cooperation and support as we work to identify and contain the [] remaining wheel. Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Sincerely,
Rick Aspiras
HWS Global Quality Director

- Forged wheels are one-piece wheels, which warranty structural integrity.
- Forged wheels are stronger because of grain refinement due to thermal cycle and process of deformation.
- Consistent forging allows achieving the same structural integrity with less material in comparison to cast wheels, which make it lighter but stonger.
- The manufacturing process excludes occurrence of cavities, porosity, and shrinkage.
- Mechanically stronger wheels because of tight grain structure. It also ensures better wear resistance
- Our commercial wheels are constructed by forging aviation-grade aluminum (6061) and then heat treated (T5T6). Easy to clean, corrosion-resistant, not easy to deform under high torque.
- German CNC tools are used to construct our commercial wheels,The surface is mechanically bright metal. (PCD): 10x285.75mm,Bore (CB): 220.1mm.
- Less weight, greater strength, and increased lifespan compared to steel wheels. Suitable for truck steering, guidance, drive, trailer position.
- Well balanced, low wobble, 30% increased tire lifespan.
