Basic Purge Procedure for Hydraulic Pump Units

BASIC PURGE PROCEDURE FOR HYDRAULIC PUMP UNITS

HYDRAULICS

Purpose

This document describes the simple steps required to purge LCI hydraulic systems. This information applies to hydraulic landing gear, hydraulic leveling jacks and hydraulic slide-outs. The basic purge procedure to bleed the LCI Hydraulic Systems is performed without the use of any tools. The system’s own function purges the air from the hydraulic lines and cylinders by simply running the pump.

Start with all hydraulic components in the fully retracted position. This means that all jacks, landing gear, stabilizers and slide-outs are brought back inside the unit as if it were ready to travel.

  1. Find the hydraulic pump location and note the amount of fluid currently in the reservoir. The fluid level should be about 1/4″ from the top of the reservoir and no more than 1/2″ from the top.

NOTE: When checking the fluid level after making sure that all hydraulic components are retracted, note if there are any bubbles, froth or foam on top of the fluid. This is an indication that air has been pushed back to the reservoir when the hydraulic components were retracted in the last cycle. Wait 15-20 minutes for the foam to dissipate before beginning the purge process. Also note that the fluid on the top, with air, will often have a lighter, more pink shade than the fluid on the bottom.

  1. If there is no froth or foam in the reservoir and the fluid is not within 1/2″ of the top, fill the reservoir to within the level described in step 2.

CAUTION

If units are equipped with electric stabilizers, fully retract stabilizer legs before proceeding.

  1. With the fluid level full and no foam in the reservoir, begin cycling the hydraulic system.
    1. MOTORIZED – Fully extend leveling jacks. If the coach has hydraulic slide-outs, extend all slide-outs. Once all leveling jacks and slide-outs are extended, immediately retract all slide-outs and then all leveling jacks .
    2. 5TH WHEELS – Extend hydraulic landing gear until footpads contact the ground, extend rear leveling jacks to touch the ground, extend all slide-outs. Retract all slide-outs immediately, retract rear leveling jacks and then retract hydraulic landing gear.

NOTE: Purging of the hydraulic system on 5th Wheels should be performed with the trailer coupled to the tow vehicle, a kingpin stand under the pin box or jack stands under the front portion of the frame.

  1. 5TH WHEELS WITH LEVEL-UP – 5th Wheels with the level-up 6-Point leveling system have the unique ability to have the hydraulic landing gear and leveling jacks extend fully. These particular 5th Wheels can be purged in the same fashion as motorized coaches.
WARNING

Do not attempt to purge this system without the front end of the 5th Wheel safely supported. Doing so could result in death or serious bodily injury.

WARNING

The unit MUST be supported per manufacturer’s recommendations before performing this procedure. Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.

  1. Check the reservoir for foam. If foam is present, see NOTE above and repeat steps 3 and 4. Repeat these steps until no foam is present in the reservoir. If no foam is present, the system is purged of air.

Presidential Tractor Hydraulic Fluid - for Multiple Applications - Power Steering, Transmission - J20C Equivalent - Industrial Lubricants and Premium Oils & Fluids - Made in USA (5 gal)
  • MULTI-PURPOSE & ALL SEASON: A premium transmission-hydraulic fluid recommended for the complex lubrication systems of modern tractors, including industrial models. In these systems, the same lubricant may serve the hydraulic system, torque converter, transmission, power take-off, differential, power steering, and wet brakes.
  • SPECIFICATIONS: Our tractor hydraulic fluid meets the following manufacturers specifications: (J20C, JD303), (Q-1826), (Improved power fluid 821XL), (ESN-M2C134-D, FNHA-2-C-201), (M1135, M1141, M1143), (Type 55), (JIC-143,144, 145, MS1206,127, 1209, 1210, TCH), (Fluids), (TO-2, MTD), (Bus Automatic Transmission Fluid), (UDT), (B6), (WB 101).
  • APPLICATIONS: Included in the above applications, this universal tractor fluid also meets most other manufacturers' specifications for transmission hydraulic fluid. It can be used for makeup or refill in almost all tractor hydrostatic, hydraulic jack oil, transmission oil, differential fluid, and other systems involving common lube oil sumps.
  • BENEFITS: This tractor transmission oil gives all-season protection. It flows readily at low temperatures due to its low-temperature viscosity and pour point, and yet retains its body at high temperatures due to a high viscosity index. Other benefits include anti-foam, anti-rust, anti-wear, extreme pressure, seal protection, oxidative and thermal stability, and controlled frictional characteristics.
  • PREMIUM LUBRICANTS: Presidential Engineered Lubricants offers premium machine oils, lubricants, and sealants for various industries. Founded in 1877, we're an employee-owned company dedicated to crafting high-quality products at our UO facility, with customer satisfaction as our top priority.
