Insufficiently Lubricated Axle Hubs

Lack of lubrication may result in a wheel separating from the front axle spindle, increasing the risk of crash.

Summary

Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2020 International HV Severe Service Diesel Trucks. The steer axle hubs may be insufficiently lubricated or not lubricated at all, which may result in wheel bearing damage.

 

Remedy

Navistar has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the steer axle wheel hubs for the proper fluid level and repair any damaged components, free of charge. The recall began June 14, 2019. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 19509.

SAFETY RECALL

Front driven axle on certain HV507 models built 02 January 2019 thru 14 May 2019 with feature code 02GAE (Meritor MX-14-120 EVO front axle).

 

DEFECT DESCRIPTION

The steer axle hubs may not have lubricant filled to the proper level at time of assembly which may result in wheel bearing damage and, in extreme instances, separation of the wheel from the front axle. Possible wheel separation from the front axle can increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

 

MODELS INVOLVED

This safety recall involves certain HV507 models built 02 January 2019 thru 14 May 2019 with feature code 02GAE (Meritor MX-14-120 EVO front axle).

 

ELIGIBILITY

This procedure applies ONLY to vehicles marked in the International@Service Portal" with Safety Recall 19509. Also complete any other open campaigns listed on the Service Portal at this time.

 

PARTS INFORMATION

Parts will only be required if directed by Meritor. Meritor will ship the parts to your location.

 

SERVICE PROCEDURE

GOVERNMENT REGULATION: Engine fluid (oil, fuel, and coolant) may be a hazard to human health and the environment. Handle all fluid and other contaminated materials (such as filters and rags) in accordance with applicable regulations. Recycle or dispose of engine fluids, filters, and other contaminated materials according to applicable State and Federal regulations.

WARNING! To prevent personal injury, and I or death, or damage to property, park vehicle on hard flat surface, turn the engine off, set the parking brake and install wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from moving in either direction.

WARNING! To prevent personal injury, and I or death, or damage to property, if the vehicle must be raised, do not work under the vehicle supported only by jacks. Jacks can slip or fall over.

WARNING! To prevent personal injury, and I or death, or damage to property, always wear safe eye protection when performing vehicle maintenance.

WARNING! To prevent personal injury, and I or death, or damage to property, allow engine I vehicle components to cool before servicing.

  1. Park vehicle on flat surface.
  2. Shift transmission to Park or Neutral and set parking brake.
  3. Turn vehicle ignition to Key OFF position
  4. Install wheel chocks.
  5. Locate and rotate left-side steer axle hub until fill / drain plug is at 3 o'clock position or 9 0'clock position.

NOTE: If a hub well contains no oil, complete Meritor Ontrac Pre-Call Worksheet (attached to this document). Contact Meritor at 886-6687221 and use reference number C19AB.

  1. Remove fill I drain plug and inspect oil level.
    • If hub well contains oil, proceed to Step 7.
    • If hub well contains no oil, proceed to Step 8, then proceed to Step 9,
  2. Install fill I drain plug to hub well.
  3. Repeat Steps 5 through 7 for right-side steer axle hub.
  4. Complete Meritor Ontrac Pre-Call Worksheet. Meritor will direct you on the repair that is to be made.
  5. Remove wheel chocks.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle corrected in accordance with this campaign must be marked with a CTS-1075 Campaign Identification Label.

Complete the label and attach on a clean surface next to the vehicle identification number (VIN) plate.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE / DEALER RESPONSIBILITIES

WARRANTY CLAIMS

Warranty claim expense is to be charged to Warranty. Claims are to be submitted in the normal manner, making reference to Safety Recall 19509.

Section 7 of the Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual contains further information related to the submission and processing of AFC / Recall claims.

As with all claim submissions, items acquired locally must be submitted in the "Other Charges" tab. The cost of any bulk items (such as a bag of cable tie straps, roll of wire, barrel of oil, or tube of silicone) should be prorated for the cost of the individual pieces / amount used during each repair.

This notice applies to your vehicle identified on the enclosed card. This notice is sent to you in accordance With the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Navistar has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2020 [email protected] series trucks built 01/02/2019 thru 05/14/2019 with Feature Code 02GAE (Meritor MX-14-120 EVO steer axle).

REASON FOR THIS RECALL

The steer axle hubs may not have lubricant filled to the proper level at time of assembly which may result in wheel bearing damage and in extreme instances, separation of the wheel from the front axle.

RISK TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY

Possible wheel separation from the front axle can increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

 

DEFECT REMEDY

The remedy will involve inspecting the steer axle wheel hubs for proper fluid level and repair any wheel end components and spindle found with damage. Dealers have parts and instructions to repair your vehicle. The repair Mill be performed free of charge and take approximately 45 minutes to 4 hours to complete.

 

ACTIONS YOU SHOULD TAKE

If you own this vehicle, please schedule an appointment with any INTERNATIONAL@ dealer to have your vehicle repaired. You can find your nearest dealer by calling 1. 800448-7825 or by using the dealer locator at http://www.intemationaltrucks.com.

If you have already paid for repairs prior to this notice that corrected the defect, you may be eligible for reimbursement of certain repair expenses if they occurred 06/07/2018 thru 06/24/2019. Present your original repair paperwork and proof of payment to any INTERNATIONAL@ dealer and your eligibility wilt be reviewed. You may also submit a claim using the enclosed Request for Reimbursement card.

If you are the lessor of this vehicle, please forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days to comply with federal regulations.

If you do not own this vehicle, please fill out and return mail the enclosed card so that you will not be contacted again about this recall.
