Interference with the front axle driveshaft could cause the drive shaft to separate, resulting in damage to other nearby components, increasing the risk of a crash.
Summary
Maintainer Corporation of Iowa, Inc. (Maintainer) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Maintainer Service Mechanic Bodies mounted on Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks. These vehicles have a FORCE America Hydraulic pump that can interfere with the front axle driveshaft when the front suspension is fully articulated, causing wear and the possible premature failure of the driveshaft.
Remedy
Maintainer will notify owners, and dealers will replace the existing pump with a different brand hydraulic pump, and inspect the front axle driveshaft for damage, replacing it as needed, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in October 2018. Owners may contact Maintainer customer service at 1-800-831-8588.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
TO: | All Dealers of Certain Maintainer Bodies Mounted on Ford F-Series Super Duty 4×4 Chassis |
DATE: | October 4, 2018 |
SUBJECT: | NHTSA Safety Recall Notice 18V669 |
Maintainer Corporation of Iowa, Inc. has filed a voluntary safety recall notice with NHTSA regarding specific units produced from December 12, 2017 through September 17, 2018. According to our records, your dealership has purchased at least one of these units. This recall is being initiated because of an interference between the FORCE America hydraulic pump (FORCE America part number AGP25-LA2-20162016-20111T) installed by Maintainer and the Ford driveshaft (included on the Ford chassis), when the truck experiences a full suspension articulation / compression. If the interference is significant or prolonged, the driveshaft could separate at the point of interference which would result in loss of power to the front drive axle and possible damage to other components near the driveshaft. This situation could result in unexpected vehicle motion, increasing the risk of a crash.
For the affected units, Maintainer will make arrangements with you for removal of the existing pump and installation of a different brand of pump, at no cost to you. Maintainer will also provide guidance on the inspection of the front axle driveshaft for any prior instances of interference. If any signs are found, the driveshaft will also be replaced, free of charge. You will be contacted regarding the timing and coordination of the modifications of those units that may be in your possession.
Maintainer will be sending a separate notification to end users. If you have sold (or otherwise transferred title to) entities or persons other than end users, please forward a copy of this letter to such persons/entities within five working days of your receipt of this letter and advise us that you have done so. If you have sold (or otherwise transferred title) or leased a subject unit to an end user, then please provide us with the contact information for such end user within five working days of your receipt of this letter (if you have not already done so).
IMPORTANT ADVISORY NOTIFICATION
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect is remedied.
Do not sell, lease or dealer-trade any affected unit until the remedy described above has been completed.
If you have any questions, please contact Doug Schrader / Customer Service at 866-781-3259.
