An improperly installed wheel end hub assembly can leak oil, causing the axle spindles to loosen or fracture, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Terex Advance Mixer, Inc. (Terex) is recalling certain 2023 Commander vehicles equipped with Composilite SC20 Lift Axles. The bearing journals may not be fully seated in the steering knuckle assemblies, preventing the proper installation of the wheel end hub assemblies.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the steering knuckle assemblies as necessary, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for recall notification. Owners may contact Terex customer service at 1-800-678-5961.

Chronology :
On November 13th, 2023 – Terex Advance was notified of the issue by Hendrickson via Email.
November 15th, 2023 – Terex Advance and Hedrickson had a conference call to discuss the issue. During this we asked, based on their subject matter expertise, if this is a safety related issue. At that point they did not believe so, but were still determining that. However, they indicated that they were going to use there service network to inspect the trucks (equipped with the subject axles) and make repairs if necessary. At this time 6 of the 18 subject axles were still within Terex’s possession. Hendrickson subsequently came to our facility to inspect the axles and make repairs if necessary. 12 trucks, with the subject axle, were shipped prior to this meeting, and were under the possession of the customer. We worked with Hendrickson to put them in contact with the impacted customers so they could arrange to visit the customers location and inspect and remedy the axles involved.
March 19th, 2024 – Terex Advance received formal notification, by way of a NHTSA email, indicating that Hendrickson had filed a recall notification related to the specific axles they we discussed with Hendrickson on November 15th.
April 2nd, 2024 – Terex Advance after internal discussions and analysis of Hendrickson report, deemed this condition to be safety related. Therefore, a 573 defect report was authored. As of the authoring of this defect report, all 18 of the subject axles have been inspected and the remedy applied if necessary.

Descriptive Information : Hendrickson contacted Terex Advance Mixer and informed them that 18 Composolite SC20 axles, that were shipped to Terex, had a defect. Hendrickson provided the serial numbers of the affect axles. Terex determined that 6 of the 18 axles were still on site and scheduled repair with Hendrickson. Terex determined what vehicles the remaining 12 axles had been installed on.

Description of the Defect : A limited number of Hendrickson COMPOSILITE EXS20 and SC20 steerable auxiliary lift axle suspension assemblies and individual steering knuckle assembly components are equipped with bearing journals that may not have been seated correctly to the backbones of the left and right-side steering knuckle assembly components during manufacture.

Description of the Safety Risk : In some cases, the above-referenced condition may cause a loss of oil
lubricant from the wheel end hub assemblies. Over an extended period of operation, use of the lift axle suspension assemblies in this condition can result in (1) the respective axle spindles to become loose from the steering knuckle assemblies or otherwise fracture and/or (2) wheel end hub damage. This can further result in foreign object debris on the roadway, increasing the

Description of Remedy Program : All Customers that could possibly be impacted by this issue will be
contacted and provided inspection instructions to determine if their vehicle is impacted by this issue. if their vehicle is impacted parts and any labor associated with the remedy of the condition will be reimbursed to the customer. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The replacement steering knuckle assemblies will include journal rings that are fully seated into the knuckle backbones.
