NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V084
Manufacturer Daimler Trucks North America, LLC
Components SUSPENSION
Potential Number of Units Affected 49
Summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Western Star 49X vehicles. The suspension hanger may fail due to missing welds, which can result in difficulty steering and maintaining the direction of the front two wheels.
Remedy
The remedy is currently under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 8, 2024. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 800-745-8000. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL994.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Chronology :
In January 2024, during a routine part inspection, DTNA observed that one of the slippered hanger assemblies may not have been welded properly. DTNA promptly opened an investigation and discovered that two assemblies lacked certain welds as specified by DTNA to the supplier. Upon further analysis, the welds were determined to be located in an area that attach to the torque rods, so that under certain circumstances, the part could fatigue and eventually fail which would affect the primary steering ability. Although DTNA is not aware of any vehicles in the field where the part has actually failed, on February 2, 2024 DTNA decided to conduct a voluntary recall on all twin steering vehicles that use these parts. To date, DTNA is not aware of any failures that have occurred, nor any claims, accidents, injuries, or deaths.
