Spare Tire Carrier Bracket May Break
A detached spare tire may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Airstream, Inc. (Airstream) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Basecamp 20X travel trailers. The spare tire carrier bracket may experience metal fatigue and break, allowing the spare tire to detach from the trailer.
Remedy
The remedy is still under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 17, 2024. Owners may contact Airstream customer service at 1-877-596-6505 or 1-937-596-6111 ext. 7401 or 7411.

Chronology :
10/24/2023 – Airstream notified of a spare tire carrier bracket issue and began investigation.
10/30/2023 – Airstream VOQ from NHTSA for the same unit.
11/6/2023 – Warranty report data found additional claims.
11/8/2023 – The Airstream Safety Committee meeting convenes all known data and agrees that the root cause of the failure is unclear. Agreed to send metal sample for testing and meet to discuss the failure with chassis manufacturer (Lippert) to see if they are aware of any similar failures. Warranty running additional reports on other models produced and using this similar set up with a hat section welded to the cross member of the chassis.
11/13/2023 – Met with Lippert and still unable to determine the root cause of the failure. Lippert is not aware of any similar failures.
12/12/2023 – Safety committee meets and reviews all known data. Determines a recall is warranted.

Description of the Defect : On certain Model Year 2022-2023 Basecamp 20X travel trailers the spare tire carrier bracket mounted to the trailer chassis may experience metal fatigue and fail causing the roadside spare tire carrier support arm to drop. If this were to happen the spare tire could slip free from the carrier.

Description of the Safety Risk : If the spare tire carrier bracket were to fail and the spare tire were to slip free from the carrier, the spare tire would become a hazard to vehicles traveling behind the trailer with the failed spare tire carrier. This increases the risk of personal injury and/or property damage. Airstream is not aware of any occurrences or injuries related to this condition.
Description of the Cause : The cause of the failure is still undetermined. Identification of Any Warning
