Summary
Midwest Fire Equipment & Repair Company (Midwest Fire) is recalling certain 2022-2023 All-Poly Series Tanker-Pumper fire trucks, equipped with a split-shaft transmission and a Class 1 Es-Key multiplex system. A software error may cause a shift from road gear to pump gear, resulting in a loss of drive power.
Remedy
Midwest Fire will provide a USB and instructions to reprogram the multiplex system software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on October 15, 2023. Owners may contact Midwest’s customer service at 1-800-344-2059.

Chronology :
On April 4, 2023, customer took possession of their All-Poly Series Tanker-Pumper at which time they proceeded to drive the vehicle home. During their trip, they lost drive to the rear axle on several different occasions at which point they would pull over and shift from pump gear to road gear in order to reengage the rear axle. Once the department reached their destination, we worked with the local service center to troubleshoot the issue. After several months of trial and error, it was concluded there was intermittent power supplied to the pump shift multiplex system which allowed the air pressure for the pump shift to slowly decrease during travel. Programming was adjusted to supply constant power to the system which in turn supplied constant air to the pump shift, not allowing the truck to come out of road gear. At that time, we identified a total of 19 trucks that were programmed incorrectly & came to the conclusion a recall would be necessary.

Production Dates : OCT 01, 2021 – JUL 31, 2023 Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The affected vehicles are equipped with a split-shaft transmission and the Class1 Es-Key multiplex system. The Es-Key multiplex system needs to be reprogrammed from park brake power to always on power to the pump interlock module. Without this update, the vehicle may experience pump shifting issues. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : This condition could potentially result in the pump shifting out of road mode while driving, resulting in the lose of drive to the rear axles. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : NR Involved Components : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-624 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Component Name : NR Component Description : NR Component Part Number : NR Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : On April 4, 2023, customer took possession of their All-Poly Series Tanker-Pumper at which time they proceeded to drive the vehicle home. During their trip, they lost drive to the rear axle on several different occasions at which point they would pull over and shift from pump gear to road gear in order to reengage the rear axle. Once the department reached their destination, we worked with the local service center to troubleshoot the issue. After several months of trial and error, it was concluded there was intermittent power supplied to the pump shift multiplex system which allowed the air pressure for the pump shift to slowly decrease during travel. Programming was adjusted to supply constant power to the system which in turn supplied constant air to the pump shift, not allowing the truck to come out of road gear. At that time, we identified a total of 19 trucks that were programmed incorrectly & came to the conclusion a recall would be necessary. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Midwest Fire will send a USB to USB cable to do the reprogramming of the Class1 multiplex system at no charge to the customer. The customer will need to go to https://www.haleproducts.com/vehicle-electronics/ supernode-ii#product_tabs_download, create an account with a username and password and then download the ES-KeyPro II Read Only Version 1.0.93 program and save to their desktop. Customer will then call Midwest Fire who will login remotely and install the new program for them. This will be done at no charge to the affected customers. Given the small number of customers affected by the recall, we will also call the customer directly to notify them.
