IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.
This notice relates to the shims used on Trail King Flip Axles, Pin-On Axles, Air Boosters, and Booster extensions. Trail King has determined that a safety defect that relates to the shims used in the front of the units involved could become loose if the flip or booster loses compression.
What Trailers are being recalled?
This recall affects Trail King Flip Axles, Pin-On Axles, Air Boosters, and Booster Extensions manufactured dates of January 1992 through August 2023 model years that use removable shims between the unit and the unit these attach to.
What is the Problem?
The affected trailers use additional pin-on axles or pivot extensions installed at the rear of the trailer to extend the trailer’s load-carrying capacity and more evenly distribute weight over the trailers’ axles. The pin-on axles and pivot extensions are attached to the trailer by lower pins and use shims to compress against the trailer at the top. The shims are used to transfer weight between the trailer and the pin-on axle. If an airline or the air ride suspension under the trailer or pin-on axle experiences a sudden failure (e.g., struck by road debris) and becomes disconnected, the pin-on axle or pivot extension could suddenly lose compression with the trailer allowing it to shift suddenly. In this event, while there is no loss of control of the trailer, the shims could become loose and ultimately dislodge from the connection point.
What should you do?
Obtain and confirm your trailer’s serial number from the VIN plate located on the driver’s side of the unit. You are receiving this letter because our records show you are the current owner of this vehicle.
What will we do?
Trail King Industries is conducting a safety recall campaign to address this issue. Trail King will provide new shims, tether, and hardware to bolt to the trailer. Trail King will provide up to 1 hour of labor and replacement parts necessary to remedy units. The repair will be provided on all affected trailers free of charge. Please contact your nearest Trail King Industries dealer to have your trailer inspected and repaired. You also can contact Trail King Industries directly at 1-800-843-3324 and our Customer Service Department will help you locate a dealer near you. We will send the parts needed to the dealer to repair your trailer.
Please note, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by the notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.
Chronology :
On June 16, 2023, Trail King received a report from a customer that a shim located between a loaded heavy-duty trailer and the pin-on axle had detached while the trailer was in operation and with a pilot car following behind the load. The customer reported that a shim was projected into the air and into the front of the pilot car following the load.
Because of this event, Trail King initiated an investigation to determine if this condition was an isolated incident or potentially a broader issue. It was determined that the suspension supply line of the trailer had suddenly and unexpectedly become disconnected (possibly struck by road debris that severed the line), causing the air in the flip axle to quickly release, resulting in loss of compression on the shims. Trail King has been manufacturing trailers with the same pin-on axle and pivot extension design for decades and is not aware of any similar reports. Through the investigation, it was identified that with a unique chain of events such as the customer described the possibility that the same or similar chain of events could happen again could not be ruled out. Although no injuries were involved in this incident, Trail King thus decided to proceed with a recall.
On August 8, 2023, Trail King decided to conduct a recall for this issue.

General Recall Reimbursement Plan Pursuant to the requirements set forth in 49 C.F.R. Part 573 and Part 577 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Trail King Industries Inc., is submitting the required information pertaining to our general reimbursement plan for the cost of remedies paid for by vehicle owners before they are notified of a related safety recall. Set forth below is Trail King’s general plan to reimburse owners and purchasers for costs incurred for remedies in advance of notification of potential safety-related defects or noncompliance pursuant to Part 573.6(c)(8)(i). Reimbursement Notification Trail King’s notice to a vehicle owner in accordance with 49 C.F.R. Part 577 will indicate whether Trail King is offering a refund. An owner will be eligible for reimbursement if the owner paid to have service to remedy the defect or noncompliance prior to a specified ending date. In accordance with Part 573.13(c)(2), the ending date shall be ten calendar days after the date on which Trail King mailed the last of its Part 577 notifications to owners in the United States unless a specific reimbursement plan is made available for a particular recall. Owners are instructed to seek eligible reimbursement through a Trail King Service Center or, at their option directly through Trail King at the following address: Trail King Industries Inc. 300 East Norway Mitchell, SD 57301 Trail King notes that in accordance with regulation, Trail King may identify a beginning date for reimbursement eligibility. Under the rule, an owner who paid to remedy the defect or noncompliance prior to the identified beginning date would not be eligible for reimbursement. Trail King generally has not established such a beginning date for reimbursement eligibility and does not presently anticipate changing this general policy. However, in any case, where Trail King determines that a beginning date is appropriate, Trail King will indicate that date in the specific reimbursement plan for that particular recall. As permitted by Part 577.11(e), Trail King may not include a reimbursement notification when all vehicles are well within the warranty period, subject to approval by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”). Costs to be Reimbursed. For vehicles, reimbursement will not be less than the lesser of: Version 11.4.21 1. The amount paid by the owner for the remedy that specifically addressed and was reasonably necessary to correct the defect or noncompliance that is the subject of the recall; or 2. The costs of the par(s) for the remedy (to be no more than the manufacturer’s list retail price for authorized part(s), plus associated labor at local labor rates, miscellaneous fees (such as disposal of waste), and taxes. For replacement equipment, reimbursement will be the amount paid by the owner for each replacement item (limited to the amount of the retail list price of each defective or noncompliant item that was replaced, plus taxes, where the brand or model purchased by the owner was different from the brand or model that was subject to the recall). If the item of motor vehicle equipment was repaired, the reimbursement provisions identified above for vehicles will apply. Trail King notes that costs incurred by the owner within the period during which Trail King’s original or extended warranty would have provided for a free repair of the defect or noncompliance will not be eligible for reimbursement, as provided by Part 573.13.(d)(1). Entity Authorized to Provide Reimbursement Trail King will take reimbursement requests directly or use Trail King Service Centers to reimburse owners unless a specific reimbursement plan is made available for a particular recall and will encourage owners to pursue requests for reimbursement directly through a Trail King Service Center to expedite reimbursement. The owner will be directed to submit the required documentation, upon which reimbursement eligibility will be determined. Required Documentation The reimbursement determination will depend upon the information provided by the customer. Consistent with Part 573.13(d)(4), all the following information must be submitted: 1. Claimant’s name and address. 2. For motor vehicles, the vehicle identification number (or “VIN”), vehicle make, model, and model year. 3. For replacement equipment, a description of such equipment or, for tires, the model and size. 4. Identification of the recall number (either Trail King’s or NHTSA’s recall number) 5. Identification of the owner of the recalled vehicle at the time that the pre-notification remedy was obtained. 6. An original receipt for the pre-notification remedy that includes a breakdown of the amount for parts, labor, other costs, and taxes, including costs for the replacement item. Where the receipt covers work other than to address the recall or noncompliance, Trail King may require the claimant to separately identify costs that are eligible for reimbursement. 7. If the remedy was obtained during the warranty period, documentation indicating that the warranty was not honored or that the warranty repair did not correct the problem related to the recall. Failure to submit all the above information may result in denial of the reimbursement request. Version 11.4.21 Additional Information The Part 577 required owner notice will provide a toll-free telephone number through which specific information about the reimbursement plan can be requested from Trail King. This general reimbursement plan will be incorporated into notifications pursuant to Part 573.6 by reference.
