Summary
Lippert (Lippert) is recalling certain 5200 and 6000 CURT RV axles. The axles may have an improperly tightened grease fitting that can separate and cause damage, possibly resulting in wheel detachment.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and repair, or replace the grease fittings, as necessary, free of charge. Lippert is expected to notify vehicle manufacturers in June 2023. Owners may contact Lippert customer service at 1-574-538-4514.

This Customer Notification is sent to you, the RV Manufacturer, in accordance with the requirements of the United States National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
Lippert has conducted a thorough investigation and determined an issue which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain vehicles equipped with specific 5,200 pound and 6,000 pound Curt axles. There is the possibility a grease zerk installed during the axle assembly process may not have been properly tightened. Our records indicate your company purchased one or more of the involved Lippert products built between 02/07/2023 and 05/17/2023 which are the subject of this recall. The involved products sold to you which are subject to the recall are listed in detail in a spreadsheet included with this notice. If these products are still in your inventory, you must not sell or install these into units. It is a violation of federal law to sell any of the listed products covered by this recall until the defect is remedied. The inspection and/or remedy instructions will be sent to you as soon as they are completed.
WHAT WE WILL DO
Lippert will reimburse dealers or mobile repair facilities to inspect the involved axles to verify the grease zerks are tightened correctly and to replace or properly tighten as necessary. As stated above, we will forward the written instructions once completed. Any parts which may be determined to be needed for the remedy are currently available.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
The involved products must be inspected per the instruction document we will be forwarding to you once completed. Once your company is notified the inspection and/or corrective action has been completed please submit a claim documenting the details to claims@lci1.com for payment of any parts and labor charges.

GREASE ZERK INSPECTION/CORRECTION PROCEDURE

Inspection – 0.3 hours per axle
Date: July 10, 2023
Purpose
This document provides instructions for completion of Lippert Recall 23E-046 on specific 5,200 lb and 6,000 lb CURT axles installed on Grand Design Recreational Vehicles which may not have had the grease zerk properly tightened during the assembly process. These instructions will explain how the grease zerks are to be inspected and, if necessary, corrected or replaced. The Lippert production dates are Feb. 7, 2023, to May 17, 2023.
OEM Instructions
The involved products must be inspected per this document. Once the inspection/corrective action has been completed, follow Grand Design instructions for submission of claims and to immediately notify them of recall completion.

Labor allowance for this inspection is 0.3 hours per axle and labor allowance for any zerk replacement is 0.3 hours per axle.

Safety
This document provides general instructions. Many variables can change the circumstances of any procedure, i.e. the degree of difficulty involved in the service operation and the ability level of the individual performing the operation. This document cannot begin to plot out procedures for every possibility, but will provide the general instructions for effectively installing, removing or servicing the system. In the event the skill level required is too advanced or the procedure too difficult, a certified technician should be consulted before performing the necessary operation. Failure to correctly install, remove or service the system may result in voiding the warranty, inflicting injury or even death.

- Torque wrench to measure in-lbs
- 5/16″ socket
- Grease zerk PN 122255 (If needed)
Procedure
1. Use a flat screwdriver to remove the rubber plug from the dust cap (Fig. 1).
2. Inspect the grease zerk located behind the dust cap (Fig. 1).
A. Make sure the grease zerk is installed straight and no more than one thread is showing at the base
of the zerk.
B. If more than one thread is showing or there is a gap in front, tighten the zerk to 90 to 100 in-lbs.
C. If the zerk is damaged, replace it.
3. Replace rubber plug on dust cap.
