Summary
PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Peterbilt 579 and 2023 Kenworth T680 vehicles. Incorrect software in the battery electric heavy duty electronic stability control program may underestimate the mass of the vehicle. As such, these vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 136, “Electronic Stability Control Systems on Heavy Vehicles.”
Remedy
Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17, 2023. Owners may contact PACCAR’s customer service at 1-425-828-5888 (Kenworth) and 1-940-591-4220 (Peterbilt). PACCAR’s numbers for this recall are 23PBA and 23KWA.

Safety Recall –
The battery-electric heavy duty electronic stability control program underestimates the mass of the vehicle. An incorrect estimate of vehicle mass can negatively impact the performance of the stability control system and may increase the risk of a crash. Updated software will be loaded by Meritor representatives to correct the miscalculation.

11/4/2022 – Safety and Compliance was included in Meritor/PACCAR weekly meeting.
11/10/2022 – Product Safety and Compliance talked with Engineering about testing plan and completion status.
11/11/2022 – Peterbilt Safety and Compliance discussed subject with Bendix. Received pertinent information involving system and possible effects.
11/14/2022 – Peterbilt Safety and Compliance sent questions to Meritor. Received information about the software and next steps.
11/30/2022 – Peterbilt Safety and Compliance got updates from Engineering about Testing results.
Peterbilt Safety and Compliance reached out to Field Service about customer complaints. No complaints have been submitted. Warranty search found no claims submitted.
12/5/2022 – Product Safety and Compliance sent estimated chassis population to customer service for US/Canada split preparing for presentation.
12/6/2022 – Product Safety and Compliance completed US/Canada split for estimated chassis population at this time.
12/9/2022 – Product Safety and Compliance presented subject to Safety Committee. Committee requested more detail on the issue.

Revision Condition / Complaint / Introduction
Peterbilt Motors Company has determined that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model year 2022-2023 579 Battery-Electric vehicle chassis. The battery-electric heavy duty electronic stability control program in the current software underestimates the mass of the Safety Recall 23KWA / 23PBA: T680 / 579 Battery-Electric Vehicle Stability Control Mass Calculation 23KWA (23PBA)
/ 23V007 / 2023-007 vehicle. An incorrect estimate of vehicle mass can negatively impact the performance of the stability control system and may increase the risk of a crash. NOTE When software is updated, vehicles may experience incorrect operation of certain components. These issues will be addressed in a future software update. Refer to Bulletin 46- 003 for more information. 1. Power gauge will display approximate axle speed instead of actual power usage.
2. Air conditioner compressor will not operate below 10mph (16kph) or over 40mph (65kph). HVAC Blower and heater will operate normally.
3. Low air and low coolant audible alarms (buzzers) will not operate below 10mph (16kph). Low air and low coolant visual warnings will operate normally. Chassis Affected / Situation 38 (36 US and 2 CAN) Model Year 2021-2023 Models 579EV Battery-Electric Vehicles (BEV) with Meritor electric drive axles and software R4 or below (PNs Q30-6025, Q30-6026, or Q30- 6028). PPD – Component Sales – N/A Safety Recall Meritor has established a repair procedure and is providing a software update for affected chassis. Service Action / Resolution Affected chassis will be marked in SIR with campaign code 23PBA. This campaign code will be marked “complete” when repairs have been confirmed by Meritor. All repairs will be coordinated and performed by Meritor representatives. No warranty claim is necessary for affected vehicles. However, Peterbilt is required to notify customers of the existence of the identified safety defect. Dealers can contact Meritor OnTrac at 866-668-7221 with any questions regarding this recall. NOTE When software is updated, vehicles may experience incorrect operation of certain components. These issues will be addressed in a future software update. Dear Peterbilt Customer,
Peterbilt Motors Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2022 and 2023 579 Battery-Electric vehicles manufactured from 01/10/2022 through 12/20/2022.
The battery-electric heavy duty electronic stability control program in software versions R4 and below underestimates the mass of the vehicle. An incorrect estimate of vehicle mass can adversely impact the performance of the stability control system which may increase the risk of a crash.
Peterbilt has initiated a recall to remedy the defect in cooperation with Meritor. The repair will be coordinated and performed by Meritor free of charge. However, Peterbilt is required to notify customers of the existence of the identified safety defect. If needed, please contact your
Peterbilt dealer. To find your Peterbilt dealer, please visit Dealer Locator at www.Peterbilt.com or scan the QR code at the bottom of this letter. This repair will take approximately 1 hour to complete.
Upgrading to R5 software may cause the following incorrect operation of certain components:
• Power gauge will display axle speed instead of actual power usage.
• Air conditioner compressor will not operate below 10 mph or over 40 mph. HVAC Blower and heater will operate normally.
• Low air and low coolant audible alarms (buzzers) will not operate below 10mph (16kph). Low air and low coolant visual warnings will operate normally.
These programming faults will be addressed with a future software upgrade. Owners will be contacted about the software upgrade separately when the software is available.
The problem is… 579 Battery-Electric Vehicle mass estimation programming is incorrect.
What your dealer will do… Meritor will install new software to correct the miscalculation.
What you must do… If needed, please contact your Peterbilt dealer to help coordinate this repair.
If you had this repair performed before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a
pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. Receipts for parts and/or labor are required for consideration of reimbursement.

11/10/2022 – Product Safety and Compliance talked with Engineering about testing plan and completion status. 11/11/2022 – Peterbilt Safety and Compliance discussed subject with Bendix. Received pertinent information involving system and possible effects. The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-007 Page 3 11/14/2022 – Peterbilt Safety and Compliance sent questions to Meritor. Received information about the software and next steps. 11/30/2022 – Peterbilt Safety and Compliance got updates from Engineering about Testing results.
Peterbilt Safety and Compliance reached out to Field Service about customer complaints. No complaints have been submitted. Warranty search found no claims submitted. 12/5/2022 – Product Safety and Compliance sent estimated chassis population to customer service for US/ Canada split preparing for presentation. 12/6/2022 – Product Safety and Compliance completed US/Canada split for estimated chassis population at this time. 12/9/2022 – Product Safety and Compliance presented subject to Safety Committee. Committee requested more detail on the issue. 12/14/2022 – Meritor R5 software proposed for implementation. 12/16/2022 – Peterbilt Safety and Compliance reached out to Paccar Technical Center and supplier about previous completed supplier testing. 12/20/2022 – Meritor implemented containment plan of software version R5. 1/5/2023 – Safety and Compliance verifying affected chassis list.
1/10/2023 –Safety Committee meeting held to answer questions from previous meeting. Concluded with issuing a safety recall. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Paccar will notify owners, and dealers that a software update will need to
be performed on affected trucks. Owners who incurred costs to obtain a remedy for the problem addressed in the recall in advance of receiving notification may seek reimbursement through the process outlined in the general reimbursement plan on file. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The remedied vehicles will have a new release of the software, which is version R5.
