Summary
Lippert (Lippert) is recalling certain hub assemblies produced for use in the Utility market, Brake Hub – 865H-5/8 part number: 243185. The hub assemblies may have been produced with incorrect bearings, which can cause the bearings to overheat and allow the wheel to detach.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the axles as necessary, free of charge. Vehicle manufacturers are expected to be notified on September 30, 2022. Owners may contact Lippert customer service at 1-574-538-4514. Lippert’s number for this recall is 045-2022-002.

This Customer Notification is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the United States National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
Lippert has conducted a thorough investigation and determined an issue which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain Utility towable units equipped with 243185 HUB ASSY – BRAKE HUB – 865H-5/8 – HYBRID – GRS. There is the possibility that the hub assy may have the incorrect point bearing installed. Our records indicate that your company purchased one or more of the involved suspected Lippert axles built between 4-20-22 and 5-0622 which are the subject of this recall. The Axles sold to you which are subject to the recall are listed in detail in a spreadsheet included with this notice. If these products are still in your inventory, you must not sell or install these into units. It is a violation of federal law to sell any of the listed axles covered by this recall until the defect is remedied. The axles inspection instructions are enclosed with this letter.
WHAT WE WILL DO
Lippert will reimburse dealers or mobile repair facilities to perform the necessary inspection and, if needed, replace the axle if the incorrect point bearing is installed. Please see the enclosed instructions. Any parts which may be determined to be needed for the remedy are currently available.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
You or your dealer must inspect the involved component as outlined on the attached instructions and submit a claim documenting the inspection and verification of no issue found for payment of the labor charges. If an issue is found, you or your dealer must complete the outlined repair for payment of the labor charges. Lippert’s Customer Service department may be reached via email at recall@lci1.com or via phone at 574-538-4514 if there are any questions. Lippert does not require advance contact or a pre-auth be obtained; labor allowance for this inspection is 0.3 hours; additional labor allowance for the replacement of the axle is 1.0 hours with the original bearing not required to be returned. A photo of the incorrect bearing in the hub and a clear photo of both the unit VIN tag and the axle label showing the serial number must be submitted once inspection or repair is completed. Lippert will coordinate shipments of any needed repair axles or product with the vehicle Manufacturer.

8-30-22 – Internal Notification of concern to necessary parties.
8-31-22 – Inspected OEM’s uninstalled inventory of axles. Located three (3) complete axles and inspected at one location. All hubs had the correct bearing installed. Secondary location found two (2) complete axles, inspection performed. All hubs had the correct bearing installed.
9-1-22 – Additional inspection at an OEM location. Two (2) complete axles found and inspected. All hubs had the correct bearing installed.
9-6-22 – Continued investigation with inspection at an OEM. Located eight (4) complete axles and inspected. All hubs had the correct bearing installed.
9-8-22 – Removed Eighteen (18) complete axles from an OEM and transported to Lippert Plant 241 for inspection. All hubs had the correct bearing installed.

The hub assemblies are produced in batch lots for the complete axle assembly process. Recalled products are different from products not included in the recall due to the products not included were not built iwth the batch lots of hubs which are the subject of this recall. There are two hubs on each axle and the number of complete 2022 axles included is 202.
Production Dates : APR 20, 2022 – MAY 06, 2022
Description of Defect :
Description of the Defect : There is a possibility the specific lots of hub assemblies produced may have an incorrect outer bearing which could overheat.
FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : If an incorrect bearing was used in production the bearing could be loose in the bearing cup and could potentially overheat causing a bearing failure. If not detected this failure could potentially result in a wheel off scenario increasing the chances of a crash.
Description of the Cause : The operator at the assembly placed the incorrect bearing into the outer bearing journal.
Identification of Any Warning The hub would start to overheat, potentially emitting smoke from the defective
wheel. The tire would start to wobble. Description of Remedy Program : Any axles found to have the incorrect bearing installed in the hub will be
replaced with a complete axle. Lippert will reimburse all costs involved including labor and freight to inspect complete axles, inspect hubs and to remove and replace any axles found to be built with the incorrect bearing. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Any axles found to have the incorrect bearing installed in the hub will be
replaced with a complete axle. Lippert will reimburse all costs involved including labor and freight to inspect complete axles, inspect hubs and to remove and replace any axles found to be built with the incorrect bearing. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The remedy component is built with the correct outer bearing (02475) installed
9-5-22 – Implemented a secondary check to verify the correct bearings were at the grease pack process. Recall Schedule :
