Steering Shaft Assembly Inspection
1. Check the base label (Form WAR259) for a completion sticker for FL952 (Form WAR260) indicating this work has been completed. The base label is usually located on the passenger-side door, about 12 inches (30 cm) below the door latch. If a completion sticker is present, no work is needed. If a completion sticker is not present, go to the next step.
2. Park the vehicle on a level surface with the front tires pointed straight ahead. Shut down the engine, set the parking brake, and chock the tires.
3. Open the hood.
4. With the truck running, turn the wheel so the pinch bolt is accessible at the top of the steering shaft.
5. Inspect the I-shaft to ensure it is seated all the way down to the steering gear. For correct installation, see Fig. 1. For incorrect installation, see Fig. 2.
If installed properly, no further action is required. Proceed to step 6.
If lifted and not seated correctly, go to the Pinch Bolt Replacement procedure below.
6. Clean a spot on the base label (Form WAR259), write the recall number, FL952, on a blank red completion sticker (Form WAR260), and attach it to the base label, indicating this work has been completed.
Pinch Bolt Replacement
IMPORTANT: Be careful not to turn the shaft while removing the pinch bolt.
NOTICE
NOTICE: Do not remove the steering shaft from the steering gear; it is only necessary to slide it the rest of the way on the steering gear until seated completely. Removal of the I-shaft could result in the steering wheel being rotated and damaging the clock spring. Once the shaft is seated and the new pinch bolt is installed, torque the nut on the pinch bolt until required torque is achieved.
1. Remove and discard the pinch bolt and nut on the gearside of the I-shaft.
2. Slide the steering shaft down so it is flush with the steering gear.
3. Install the new pinch bolt and nut.
4. Tighten the pinch bolt 30 to 35 lbf·ft (41 to 47 N·m).
5. Use blue torque seal after the required torque has been set.
6. Clean a spot on the base label (Form WAR259), write the recall number, FL952, on a blank red completion sticker (Form WAR260), and attach it to the base label, indicating this work has been completed.
Chronology :
In early August, 2022 DTNA received a report of a mis-installed pinch bolt where the intermediate shaft connects to the steering gear, and an investigation was immediately initiated. Later in August, 2022, the plant where the defect originated completed an internal investigation establishing a clean date. That investigation determined the issue to be a problem with inspection on a limited population of vehicles, which has been identified. There were no warranty claims, accidents nor injuries confirmed to be related to the defect. On September 6th, 2022, out of an abundance of caution DTNA decided to conduct a safety recall on the above referenced vehicles. In late September 2022, two vehicles within the originally identified population were found to still be under DTNA control and were remedied before being sent to the field.

Steering Shaft Assembly Inspection 1. 12/16/2021 f462466 Fig. 1, I-shaft Installed Properly Daimler Truck North America LLC Recall Campaign October 2022 FL952A NHTSA #22V-681 Transport Canada #2022-513 Page 6 6. Clean a spot on the base label (Form WAR259), write the recall number, FL952, on a blank red completion sticker (Form WAR260), and attach it to the base label, indicating this work has been completed. Pinch Bolt Replacement IMPORTANT: Be careful not to turn the shaft while removing the pinch bolt. NOTICE NOTICE: Do not remove the steering shaft from the steering gear; it is only necessary to slide it the rest of the way on the steering gear until seated completely.
