July 12, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V499000
Incorrect Trailer Hitch Mounting Bolts Installed
Inadequate thread engagement may result in bolt failure, possibly causing hitch separation and a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V499
Manufacturer Vermeer Manufacturing Company
Components TRAILER HITCHES
Potential Number of Units Affected 16
Summary
Vermeer Manufacturing Company (Vermeer) is recalling certain 2022 BC1800XL trailers. The improper length mounting bolts were installed on the trailer hitches, resulting in inadequate thread engagement of the pintle hitch mounting bolts.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the tongue and pintle bolts of proper length, at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 25, 2022. Owners may contact Vermeer’s customer service at 1-800-829-0051 ext. 7060. Vermeer’s number for this recall is IK4266.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Purpose:
Vermeer has decided that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2022 Vermeer BC1800XL brush chippers.
Pintle hitch mounting bolts failure may occur. During manufacturing, improper length mounting bolts were installed, causing damage to the tapped threads.
Inadequate thread engagement of the mounting bolts may result in bolt failure, leading to pintle hitch separation from the tongue/tow bar. See photo at right.
If improper length bolts are installed, contact your local Vermeer dealer to make arrangements for the dealer to replace the tongue and pintle hitch bolts.
DO NOT:
- tow the brush chipper on public roadways, or
- operate the brush chipper, as operation applies forces to the pintle hitch which may cause the improper length bolt to break, resulting in injury and/or brush chipper damage.
Death or serious injury possible. When towing the brush chipper on public roadways, death or serious injury may result due to the loss of control of the brush chipper and towing vehicle. A pintle hitch separation from the tongue/tow bar may increase the risk of crash. Property or equipment damage may also occur.
Immediate machine modification required. IK004266 has been created to provide the necessary parts and instructions to replace the tongue and pintle bolts of proper length. The kit must be installed as soon as possible.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law for you to sell or lease the machines covered by this notification until this recall has been performed on these machines. Substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law.

DO NOT: • tow the brush chipper on public roadways, or • operate the brush chipper, as operation applies forces to the pintle hitch which may cause the improper length bolt to break, resulting in injury and/or brush chipper damage. Improper length bolt (Bolt engaged in approximately 1/3 of tapped hole.)
