The Audi virtual cockpit display is black. The display failure can occur intermittently or permanently.

Complaint 2
The following message appears in the Audi virtual cockpit display "Instrument cluster: fault. Limited warning
messages. Please contact workshop” and the status line (bottom edge of the display) shows the brake, anti-lock
brake system, steering and safety systems warning lamps.
Workshop findings:
The respective customer statement can be reproduced.
Regarding complaint 2, field campaign 90VC was carried out before the complaint occurred and included a
software update for the Audi virtual cockpit.
In addition, the event memory entry “B200049 — Control! module faulty, static/active, symptom 10485833” is
logged under diagnostic address 0017 of the Audi virtual cockpit for both complaints.

Hardware issue in Audi virtual cockpit.
Production Solution
Optimized hardware in Audi virtual cockpit was implemented on 1 July 2021 (production date of Audi virtual cockpit).

The following procedure is only for the A6, A7, Q7, and Q8!
The procedure for the A8 is described further down in this TSB.
The two flexible films in the Audi virtual cockpit must be replaced as described below. The Audi virtual cockpit must
be removed and opened to do this.
Order the repair kit with part number 4KO0 998 790 before starting the work.
The repair kit for the A6, A7, Q7, and Q8 is NOT compatible with the repair kit for the A8!
When placing the order, please make sure you use the correct part number for the affected vehicle (see also
“Parts information”).
Remove the faulty Audi virtual cockpit from the vehicle according to the instructions in the Workshop Manual.
The repair work described below for the Audi virtual cockpit may only be carried out in an environment that is
protected against electrostatic discharge (ESD). To ensure this, an earthed ESD workplace mat (e.g. VAS 6613)
must be used (see Figure 1). In addition, you must wear an ESD wrist strap (see Figure 2) and nitrile gloves (see
Figure 3) to protect you against electrostatic discharge. It is recommended to wear an ESD coat. The ESD
workplace mat must be earthed via an earthing connector and must be clean.
When performing the work described below, you must only touch the areas specified and must only do so while
wearing and using the specified ESD equipment.

AMOST protective connector is required to protect the fiber optic cable socket against dirt (see Figure 4).

In addition to the ESD equipment and the MOST protective connector, an assembly tool is required for the work
described below (see Figure 5). This is included in the repair kit along with a pair of gloves, a folded flexible film (in a
separate ESD bag) and a flat flexible film (in a separate ESD bag).

After removing the Audi virtual cockpit from the vehicle and unplugging the connector, fit the MOST protective
connector on the fiber optic cable socket to protect it against dirt (see Figure 4). To do so, fit the MOST protective
connector on the fiber optic cable connection (see Figure 6).

After removing the Audi virtual cockpit from the vehicle according to the instructions in the Workshop Manual, place
the Audi virtual cockpit on the ESD workplace mat.
To remove the back cover, first push the loudspeaker connector cap (see Figure 10, item 1) to the side and fold it
open, as shown (see Figure 7).

Then grasp the loudspeaker cable close to the connector with two fingers and hold it. With your other hand, press
the connector out of the locking element using the pointed end of the assembly tool, working alternately on each
side (see Figure 8).

Remove the back cover as follows: Pull gently on the cover and simultaneously release the catches using the flat
end of the assembly tool (see Figure 9) in the order shown (see Figure 10, items 2 to 12) so that there is a small gap
between the front and back covers. Then press the metal clip (see Figure 11) and lift off the back cover.

Once the Audi virtual cockpit has been opened, the flexible films (marked in red in Figure 12) must be replaced. To
do this, first open the black retaining tab for the connector for the folded flexible film on the main printed circuit board
with your finger (see Figure 13).

After opening the retaining tab (see Figure 14), carefully lift the released folded flexible film out of the connector (see
Figure 15).

Then open the retaining tab on the other side of the connector (see Figure 16). If this is not possible, you can use
the wide side of the assembly tool to open the retaining tab (see Figure 17). Take care not to damage any other
components in the vicinity while opening the retaining tab.
Then lift the folded flexible film out of the connector (see Figure 18).

Repeat the procedure exactly for the flat flexible film on the other side.
Both the removed flexible films are clearly identifiable by their white contact surfaces (see Figure 19). Dispose of
flexible films.

Now install the new folded flexible film (clearly identifiable by its blue contact surfaces; see component on right in
Figure 20). Make sure that the folded flexible film is in the correct position (see Figure 21).

To install the folded flexible film, first insert the film in the connector of the satellite printed circuit board at the bottom
by hand. To do this, insert the flexible film in the connector from above and push it in until flush and the retaining
tabs of the connector are positioned in the recesses of the flexible film (see Figure 22). The blue side of the cable
must point upwards.

If the flexible film has been inserted correctly, the retaining tabs can then be closed. Figure 23 shows how the closed
connector must look. Figure 24 shows a flexible film that has been inserted incorrectly.
