Some Customers may comment on a noise coming from the
vehicle
Cause
Upon Inspection the noise may be coming from the rear of the
engine or the front of the transmission
Correction:
If the vehicle is exhibiting a noise that is originating from under the vehicle, verify where
the noise is coming from
Raise the vehicle in the air and with the engine running and using a stethoscope verify the
noise is coming from the rear of the engine or the front of the transmission
If needed attach a vacuum hose to the vent of the transmission to verify the noise
NOTE: Do not unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate as this could lead to not only
to damage to the engine/transmission it can also result in an incorrect diagnosis
Once the noise is confirmed to be from the front of the transmission, prior to removing the
unit for inspection please verify the following:
If equipped with an L3B engine make sure to follow bulletin 24-NA-078, If the noise if
found to be coming from the starter assembly replace the starter and re-evaluate the
concern
The starter noise may be intermittent, and the noise can begin even after the engine is
running or following a remote start
If the vehicle is equipped with any of the following engines LV3, LT1, LT4, L82, L84, L87,
L8T please follow bulletin 23-NA-170 and verify the noise is not coming from the engine or
a damaged thrust bearing
NOTE: There have been instances of transmissions replaced for engine noise, and often
this noise can appear to be coming from the front and/or middle of the transmission based
on the transfer path
If no concern is seen with the starter and the engine, the transmission will need to be
removed and inspected
Make sure to verify the transmission endplay measurement using the proper procedure in
SI prior to replacing the torque converter and prior to disassembly of the unit
There have been instances of a worn, damaged or missing transmission thrust bearing that
can be easily overlooked if the end play is not checked prior to disassembly
If the end play is excessive, please disassemble and inspect the transmission including the
thrust bearing for any concern
If the endplay is within specification please continue with normal SI diagnostics
