SITUATION
Customer complains of a musty odor or damp front footwell carpet.

CAUSE
1. The condensate drain hose is blocked by the heat shield
2. The condensate drain hose is not attached properly to the housing
3. The condensate drain hose was damaged during installation

CORRECTION
Replace the condensate drain hose if it is damaged or drains slowly.

PROCEDURE
Check the vehicle history to see whether the condensation drain has previously been exchanged. Another
exchange must not be invoiced under warranty.
In the case of a customer complaint, perform the following work to perform a visual check of the fit of the
sealing surface / contact surface of the condensation drain:
Disassemble the footwell trim on the driver’s /
passenger's side; remove the center bottom
left / right instrument panel trim (driver’s and
passenger’s side).

Using a lever, press the carpet down to obtain
a clear view of the condensation drain sealing
crown to the heating and air conditioning unit.

Then perform a visual check, with an
endoscope, if possible, to check whether the
sealing crown has been folded down / kinked /
deformed.
A correctly installed drain is shown.
NOTE: This inspection and repair can be
performed without removal of the IHKA
heater/AC box assembly.

If an outflow of condensation is visible, the
condensation drain must be replaced.
Note: Perform a visual inspection of the
driver's and passenger's side.

If no moisture can be found, the moisture ingress must be searched for at another location and
the condensation drain must not be replaced.
When replacing the drain, treat the sealing
crown in the upper area with a lubricant (for
example: silicone lubricant: Part number 83
19 2 240 251). Make sure the drain is not
deformed and install parallel to the floor and
carpet.

After installation, check for the correct
application of the sealing surface / contact
surface.

Install all removed parts.
Recheck for proper condensate drainage from the vehicle.
After repair, turn the heat to max for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Locate IHKA housing A/C condensate drain by removing passenger side console foot well trim.
1. Use Repair Instruction 51 45 …
and remove center console trim
from both sides of the console.
Release screw (1)
Release side center console trim
panel (2) from retaining clips (3).
Feed out side center console trim
panel (2) from guides (4) and
remove.

1. Press carpet down using a nylon
lever to expose drain.

2. If drain is twisted or deformed it
must be replaced.

areas causing the molding smell
from carpet.

5. Remove brackets (1) and heat
shield screws (2) and (3).

6. Remove the clamp and support
exhaust to expose the drain.

7. Prepare new drain by cutting the
lower section approximately 30
mm. This will prevent future
blockage.

8. Before installing new drain,
lubricate (silicone spray) top of
drain shown by the yellow ring.
Make sure the drain is not
deformed and install parallel to
the floor and carpet.
