SITUATION
Trunk/tailgate may open when vehicle is locked
Trunk/tailgate may open while the vehicle is in motion, usually after stopping, such as a traffic light etc.

CAUSE
Vehicle key trunk/tailgate button may be accidentally pressed, thus opening the tailgate.

CORRECTION
Reprogram the vehicle to a two-button logic trunk/tailgate unlock command.

PROCEDURE
1. Alert the customer as to the possibility of depressing the tailgate button on the ignition key.
2. Inform the customer as to the availability of the software update.
3. Connect to ISTA and perform the conversion “Conversion, opening of tailgate only possible after
unlocking”. An ISTA screen shot is attached for general reference.
a) After the conversion is complete, demonstrate to the customer that the two-button logic is only active
if the setting for the “tailgate” is activated in the vehicle menu.

b) Inform the customer on operation of the Two Button Trunk/Tailgate unlock function. To open the
trunk/tailgate perform the following:
1. First depress the door unlock button on the vehicle key.
2. Then depress the trunk unlock button on the vehicle key.
Note: Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

WARRANTY INFORMATION
During this workshop visit, the affected vehicle may also show one or more programming and encoding
Technical Campaign repairs open where the claim submission information is available. The programming
and encoding procedure may only be invoiced one time.
Update the vehicle to the required I-level or higher by performing the open Technical Campaign instead.
When applicable, please be sure to perform any additional work (before and/or after) these repairs
require and/or close the remaining programming and encoding Technical Campaign repairs as outlined in
the corresponding Service Information Bulletin.
Only if the above situation does not apply, the BMW software solution is then:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks or
the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program as described below.

The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software I-level. If one or more control module failures occur during this programming
procedure:

Please claim this consequential control module-related repair work (including performing the
IRAP Control Unit Recovery procedure first as required, refer to the SIB in AIR) under the
defect code listed in this bulletin with the applicable AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section.
For control module failures that occurred prior to performing this programming procedure:

When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim the applicable test plan and the
corresponding control module-related repair work using the applicable defect code and labor
operations in AIR (including diagnosis with separate punch times).
