SITUATION
The sunroof reverses direction (anti-traps) just as the sunroof glass meets the wind deflector.
The sunroof may not properly initialize as a result.

CAUSE
One of more of the following potential issues may be the cause:
For G32:
A software error in the FZD (Roof function center)
Faulty sunroof wind deflector
Faulty panoramic sunroof frame assembly
For G20:
A software error in the FZD (Roof function center)

CORRECTION
Depending on the root cause, one of more of the following may be required:
Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.19.1x to I-level S15A-19-07-547 (ISTA released early September
2019) or above
Additionally, only for G32, the following may be required:
Replace the sunroof wind deflector
Replace the panoramic sunroof frame

PROCEDURE
1. Perform a vehicle test, and work through any applicable test plans which are specified as a result of fault
information.

If no clear defect can be found using ISTA and the complaint is the same as outlined above, continue to
step 2.

2. For G32 only:

If the vehicle was produced between March 30, 2019 and October 21, 2019Replace the sunroof wind deflector following repair instructions REP 54 13 090 “Removing and
installing/replacing wind deflector”
Initialize the sunroof
Retest
- If the sunroof is operating correctly after replacement, no additional correction is necessary
- If the sunroof does not operate correctly, continue to step 3
3. Program and encode the vehicle using ISTA 4.19.1x (I-Level 19-07-547) or higher. Re-initialize the sunroof,
and retest sunroof operation.

Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (refer to SI B04 23 10) when performing
programming.
Is the issue resolved after programming?
YES: No further correction required.
NO: Continue to step 4 only for G32.
For G20, continue diagnosis using ISTA. The remainder of this service information bulletin does
NOT apply

4. Remove the FZD following repair instructions REP 61 31 544 “Replace roof function center (FZD)”.
5. With the FZD removed, inspect the “LL”
number on the ID tag on the bottom of the
sunroof frame. Photo shows the location of the
ID tag.

Utilize the tables below to identify the repair
based on the “LL” number.

LL42 or Lower: Replace the glass/slide sunroof frame and wind deflector (not necessary if
already replaced during step 2) following ISTA repair instructions REP 54 13 556
“Replacing panorama glass roof frame”.
LL43 or LL44: Replace only the sunroof wind deflector following repair instructions
REP 54 13 090 “Removing and installing/replacing wind deflector” (not necessary if
already replaced during step 2).
Note: Pay close attention to the screw retrofit instructions within the repair instructions. A screw
must be retrofitted during replacement.
6. After completing the corresponding repair based on “LL” number, the front sunroof glass panel
must be correctly adjusted following repair instructions REP 54 13 001 “Adjusting front glass
slide/tilt sunroof panel”.
7. Reinitialize the sunroof and retest.
Notes on sunroof initialization for all vehicles: The sunroof must be initialized with an ambient
outside temperature between 41°F and 104°F. Initialization attempts performed outside of this

temperature range will fail. The temperature displayed on the instrument cluster must be used for
reference.

If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead of
00 00 006.
Refer to AIR for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced
one time.
Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units (RO and Claim Comments Required)
The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur during this programming
procedure:
Please claim this consequential control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section.
For control module failures that occurred prior to performing this programming procedure:
When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work
using the applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in AIR.
