This Service Information bulletin applies to:
• Class vehicles in operation on the road (Applicable N63 engine model vehicles); by
• Class members (Class Vehicle owners on the date this settlement became effective),
And it provides diagnostic/repairs instructions, as well as, Warranty Information for performed remedies.

SITUATION
1. Class Vehicles Previously Retrofitted with a 105 AH AGM 12 V Battery (No repair necessary)
Some Class Vehicles have already been retrofitted to a 105 AH battery through a prior action or repair,
no further repair is necessary.
2. Replace/Retrofit a Class Vehicle’s existing 90 AH Battery with a 105 AH AGM 12 V Battery
Class Vehicles 90 AH 12 V battery that can be retrofitted to a 105 AH 12 V battery, BMW will provide
the Settlement Class Member who is a current owner or lessee (regardless of time or mileage) with:


One (1) New 105 AH 12 V battery to replace the 90 AH 12 V battery if they did not previously receive a

105 AH replacement battery at a BMW center.
After the above, then the following applies this 105 AH 12 V battery replacement/retrofit:





If it fails within two (2) Years (unlimited mileage) of installation, not due to customer negligence, another
replacement battery should be provided.
Customer must provide a copy of the Repair Order for the prior replacement/retrofit.
Subsequent battery failures are covered by the remaining portion of the two (2) year (unlimited mileage)
coverage.

3. Replace the existing Class Vehicle’s 90 AH 12 V Battery on:



“E70 and E71” vehicles produced prior to 10/1/2011; and
“F01 and F02” vehicles produced prior to 3/1/2010 (105 Ah battery retrofit is not supported by the
F01/F02 DME software)

For the Class Vehicles noted above with a 90 AH 12 V battery that cannot accommodate the 105 AH 12 V
battery, as of July 9, 2018, BMW will provide the Settlement Class Member who is a current owner or lessee
(regardless of time or mileage) with:


One 90 AH 12 V replacement battery at a BMW center.

After the above, then the following applies to this 90 AH 12 V battery replacement:






If this replacement battery fails within two (2) years (unlimited mileage) of installation (not due to customer
negligence) another replacement should be provided.
Customer must provide the receipt/RO for the prior replacement to be eligible for another replacement
battery.
Subsequent battery failures are covered by the remaining portion of the two (2) year (unlimited mileage)
coverage.

4. The E72 (X6 ActiveHybrid) vehicle (dual) battery setup were not specified in the final
approved N63 Engine Class Action document

PROCEDURE
Important note: Do not perform an energy diagnosis for these battery replacements, except if the vehicle is
currently experiencing a battery-related issue.
12-Volt Battery (90 AH to 105 AH) Retrofit and/or (90 AH) Replacement Procedure (One-time)
1. Replace the battery with a 105 AH battery (this is an upgrade from the originally fitted 90 Ah battery).
Refer to ISTA Repair Instruction 61 21 010, “Remove and install or replace battery” and proceed to step
2.
The following exceptions apply:
• “E70 and E71” vehicles produced prior to 10/1/2011; and
• “F01 and F02” vehicles produced prior to 3/1/2010, only replace the battery with a 90 AH battery
• Proceed to step 2 (For these vehicles that cannot accept an upgrade to the 105 AH battery).

• F07, F10, F12, and F13 vehicles will require an additional hold-down clamp (P/N 61 21 7 592 923),
only if upgrading from a 90 AH battery to a 105 AH battery.
• Some vehicles have a metal tab on the battery tray. It has to be bent down flat in order to prevent
damage to the new 105 AH battery when performing the upgrade.
2. Register the new battery using ISTA. Refer to SI B61 15 12.
• Select “Enter battery replacement: same capacity” if the same size battery was installed. The
replacement is finished. No further steps are needed.
• Select “Enter battery replacement: higher/lower capacity” if the higher capacity 105 Ah battery was
installed in place of the 90Ah battery. Proceed to the next step.
3. Start an ISTA/P session using the latest version of ISTA/P.
4. Select “Conversions/Retrofits” and select “Retrofit, 105 AH AGM Battery” for the first
replacement/upgrade only.
5. Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not
have the latest software.
6. After the programming is finished, the battery replacement is finished.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).

Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units
During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one
time.
The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do not
have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur “during” this programming
procedure:
• Please claim this “consequential” control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable AIR/KSD2 labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments section.
For control module failures that occurred “prior” to performing this programming procedure:
• When “covered” under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work using the
applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in AIR/KSD2.
