This Service Information bulletin replaces SI M64 01 11 dated October 2017.
What’s New:
• Correction- Final software for the blower motor and flaps.
• Procedure: update the ISTA level and the I-Level for new programing.

SITUATION
The customer reports one, or both, of the following:
• Damp front foot-well carpet after long period of air conditioning use.
• A foul smell (musty, rotten, and vinegary) when the A/C is first turned on for a short time.

CAUSE
The condensate drain hose is not properly draining the condensate from the vehicle.
The micro-filter is absorbing condensate water from the evaporator housing.

CORRECTION


Restore proper drainage flow from the evaporator through the condensate drain hose

Clean evaporator and install modified-design micro filters, if necessary
Final software change is available as of March 2018 with release ISTA 4.10.13 and integration
level F056-18-03-512 or higher.

Note: The software adds the following new functions

o When the engine is started up, the air blows out the footwell for 12 seconds (this directs any stale air away
from the driver).
o After switching the engine off the blower motor will run for up to 120 sec (this dries the evaporator and
housing which prevents moisture from building up).

PROCEDURE
In order to effectively repair these vehicles, all the steps below must be completed. If a step is skipped
the vehicle will return shortly with the same complaint.
1. Follow the attached repair procedure to check the evaporator drain:
“M640117_Drain_Hose_Check_Modification”.
2. After the drain hose check and modification has been completed, recheck for proper condensate drainage
from the vehicle.
3. Remove the micro-filters from the IHKA housing following:

Note:

Our recommendation is to use MINI Group products such as Special Tool part number is 83 30 2 413 653 –
(MINI lance/wand) along with Spray Gun from SATA USA.

5. After cleaning, flush the evaporator:
• Self-flush the evaporator by parking the vehicle outdoors and let it run for 5 minutes with the A/C on and the
windows open.
Then turn the heat on Max and blower fan on max speed for 5 to 10 minutes.
Or
• Flush the evaporator and housing with water using the MINI lance/wand.
Then turn the heat on Max and blower fan on max speed for 5 to 10 minutes
6. Replace filters with a new part number; see the below NOTE:

To select the correct micro filter you need to get the
production date and manufacture from the printed label on A/C
housing as shown.
Reading the production date as: D.M.Y We have 2 manufactures
UK or CZ
The new micro filter is shorter and does not need a spacer.

Evaporator Housing manufactured in CZ produced to January 24, 2016 (24.01.16)
or
Evaporator Housing manufactured in UK produced to February 01, 2016 (01.02.16)
The lower micro filter is already fitted with spacers and prevents absorption of condensation.
Use one of the below part numbers:
64 11 6823724 “Micro filter”
64 11 6823725 Option code SA 534 “MICROFILTER/ACTIVATED CARBON CONTAINER”
Evaporator Housing manufactured in CZ produced from January 25, 2016 (24.01.16)
or
Evaporator Housing manufactured in UK produced from February 02, 2016 (02.02.16)
The micro filter is shorter and does not need spacer.
Use one of the below part numbers:
64 31 6835404 “Micro filter”
64 31 6835405 Option code SA 534 “MICROFILTER/ACTIVATED CARBON CONTAINER”
7. Program the vehicle using

F54, F55, F56, F57, F60

ISTA 4.10.13 or higher.

Target integration level:

F056-18-03-512 or higher

Note that ISTA 4 will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the
latest software.
Note: The new software changes the airflow from center vents to the foot well vents for the first 20
seconds after startup.
Always connect a MINI approved battery charger/power supply (SI M04 08 09).

1. Inspect the condition of the drain hose.
A. In the interior of the vehicle:
i. Use Repair Instruction 51 45 …
and remove center console trim
on both sides.
a. Release screw (1).
b. Release side center console
trim panel (2) from retaining
clips (3).
c. Feed out center console side
trim panel (2) from guides (4)
and remove.

ii. Locate IHKA housing A/C
condensate drain by removing
passenger side console foot well
trim.
iii. Press carpet down using a nylon
lever to expose drain.

Drain shown is twisted and
deformed.

B. On underside of vehicle:
i. remove brackets (1) and heat
shield screws (2) and (3) above
exhaust.

ii. Remove the clamp and support
exhaust to expose the drain.
• The exhaust heat shield must
not squash or damage the
protruding condensate drain
hose.
• There must be clearance
between the heat shield and the
drain (2).
Considering both interior and
exterior condition, is the drain
undamaged and correctly
installed?
YES- Make the modifications shown
in the next step to the end of the
installed drain hose.
NO – Prepare a new drain hose for
installation as shown in the next
step.

2. Prepare (modify) drain by cutting the
flap and lower section approximately
30 mm. This will prevent future
blockage.
Were modifications were made to the
previously installed part?
YES- Go to step 5.
NO – Continue to next step.

3. Before installing new drain, lubricate
(silicone spray) top of drain shown by
the yellow ring.
4. Make sure the drain is not deformed
and install parallel to the floor and
carpet.

A correct drain installation is shown.
5. Install all removed parts.
