In the continued collaboration with the Joint Application Development (JAD) committee, DTNA created
additional Standard Diagnostic Times (SDTs) to support the service network and streamline the
submittal process for claims related to an oil leak and/or a cylinder leak down test. The new SDTs are
available for immediate use.
There are three (3) levels of SDTs: Easy, Moderate, and Difficult. Select the level of SDT that matches
the diagnostics performed. Refer to the Includes and Comments fields under each SDT in the Detroit
Warranty System to review the operations that are included. To claim diagnostic time that was
required beyond the SDT, use General Diagnostic Time (labor code 939-1010E) and provide a detailed
explanation in the appropriate claim narrative section; please see Important Warranty Information letter
15-003 for more information about applying General Diagnostic Time. The table below provides the
new SDTs and applicable engine series, respectively.

Only one external oil leak diagnostic may be claimed per repair visit.
A seep is defined as a condition where the joint is sweating from normal expansion and contraction of the joint
interface from long term thermal cycling with engine warm-up and cool-down during normal use. A seep is best
described when a small amount of fluid residue accumulates on the surface but remains on that surface and does not
drip onto the ground (see picture below right). The seeping of fluids accumulates road grime and is unsightly but does
not constitute a warrantable failure, thus a warranty claim should not be filed.
Detroit™ Engines and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) define an external fluid leak as a condition where
fluids are pooling up or leaking onto the ground.
The Detroit™ Engine Operator’s guides have a recommendation to steam clean the engine every 60,000 miles or
2,000 hours as routine maintenance to remove unsightly road grime accumulation.
DTNA does not warranty failures that result from damage caused by road hazards, road debris, collision, misuse, or
handling. Damage during removal, installation, or damage by road hazards, road debris, abnormal operation, or nonfactory installation are not warrantable and should not be submitted for warranty reimbursement.
