Sun Visor Cracking

Certain VN and VHD model trucks without roof fairings built between 8/15/2011 and 4/16/
2012, with exterior sun visors, may have potential issues with the visor cracking. To resolve
this potential issue all affected vehicles should have the recent sun visor replaced with the
previous sun visor model. To perform the replacement, complete the following procedure.

VOLVO recommends using Permatex Black Silicone Adhesive Sealant (part number 81173,
12.9 oz cartridge) for sealing of the sun visor wiring harness grommet for the VN/VHD cab.
Please visit www.permatex.com for retailers, MSDS information and Technical Data Sheet.
This is a recommended alternative to the PARR Technologies Parlastic (SC-0274) sealant
that is used in production.

You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in Service Information,
group 80, "General Safety Practices, Cab" before performing this procedure. If you are not
properly trained and certified in this procedure, ask your supervisor for training before you
perform it.
DANGER
Before working on a vehicle, set the parking brakes, place the transmission in neutral, and
block the wheels. Failure to do so can result in unexpected vehicle movement and can
cause serious personal injury or death.
DANGER
Do not attempt to repair or service a vehicle without the proper training, tools and service
information. Failure to do so may result in component damage, serious injury or death.
DANGER
Scaffolding or other suitable work platform must be used when performing this procedure.
Failure to do so may result in a fall causing serious injury or death
N o t e : Assistance is required to complete this procedure properly.
1 Secure the vehicle for service by parking it on a flat level surface, applying the parking
brake, chocking the rear wheel, and placing the transmission in neutral.
2 Disconnect all cables from the negative (ground) battery terminals to prevent personal
injury from electrical shock and prevent damage to electrical components.

3 Remove the fasteners securing the sun visor to the mounting brackets and spacers.
Disconnect the wiring harness to the lights (if equipped). With assistance, remove and
place the sun visor in a secure location.
N o t e : Discard the sun visor plate (part number 82714165). Keep all the other removed
hardware for reuse.

4 Remove the fasteners securing the marker light cover to the sun visor and remove the
marker light cover.

5 Remove the fasteners securing the lights to the sun visor. Disconnect the wiring harness to
each light, and remove the lights.

Install the sun visor marker lights and harness into the sun visor (part number 20396525).
Install the marker light retention clips to secure the marker lights to the replacement sun
visor.

Install the new marker light cover (part number 20414375) into position with the sun visor.
Tighten the fasteners to secure.

9 Remove the old sun visor brackets from the roof and discard. Inspect the marker lamp
harness pass-through for proper sealing. If necessary reseal the pass-through.
N o t e : Discard the four (4) flange screws (part number 983585). Keep all the other
removed hardware for reuse.

10 Install the mounting brackets to the roof. Torque fasteners to 20 ± 4 Nm (15 ± 3 ft-lb).
N o t e : Only the two center brackets are installed on the roof for the replacement sun visor.
Fasteners are used to secure the corners of the replacement bracket.

Position the replacement sun visor into position on the roof. Connect the sun visor marker
light harness connector(s). Torque the side fasteners to 12 ± 2 Nm (10 ± 1 ft-lb). Torque the
center fasteners to 20 ± 4 Nm (15 ± 3 ft-lb).
N o t e : If equipped, push excess wiring into the visor using care to ensure wiring is not
damaged during installation.
N o t e : If equipped, apply an approved sealant around the wiring harness pass-through into
the cab.
12 Reconnect all previously removed cables to the negative (ground) battery terminals.
13 Check the operation of the sun visor lights.
