INTRODUCTION
Infiniti has determined that an on-board diagnostics non-compliance exists due to a software programming
issue on some 2012 M Hybrid vehicles such that, in some situations, the MIL may illuminate when no
malfunction exists. To correct this condition, Infiniti is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to
reprogram the Engine Control Module at no charge for parts or labor. If this repair is not completed, affected
vehicles may not pass an emission inspection or I/M smog check test.

IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
Infiniti has assigned identification number R1111 to this campaign. This number must appear on all
communications and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY
It is the dealer’s responsibility to check Service Comm for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the
range of this voluntary emissions recall which for any reason enters the service department. This includes
vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in a dealer’s
inventory.

individuals who have the equipment, tools, safety instruction, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. NOTE: If you believe
that a described condition may apply to a particular vehicle, DO NOT assume that it does. See your Infiniti dealer to determine if this
applies to your vehicle.

IMPORTANT
Attention California Dealers: California law prohibits owners from renewing their California registration if
emissions related recall work has not been performed. California dealers are now required to issue a proof of
correction certificate to vehicle owners upon completion of emission related recall work. Please fill out one of
the campaign completion forms for each owner that has this campaign performed. Instruct owners to keep this
certificate unless they are requested to mail it to the DMV. A sample of the form is shown below.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT: Before starting, make sure:
•

ASIST on the CONSULT PC has been freshly synchronized (updated).

•

All C-III plus software updates (if any) have been installed.
NOTE: The CONSULT PC automatically gets applicable ECM reprogramming data during ASIST
synchronization.

•

A screen print for Warranty documentation can be done from C-III plus during this process while still
cable-connected to the vehicle.

•

No DTCs stored.
¾ Use C-III plus to perform Self Diagnosis for all systems.
¾ If there are any DTCs; diagnose, perform repairs, and erase DTCs before continuing.

1. Connect the Vehicle Interface (VI) to the vehicle.
•

Make sure to use the VI for C-III plus (plus VI).
CAUTION: Make sure the VI is securly connected. If the VI connection is loose during reprogramming
the process will be interrupted and the ECM may be damaged.

2. Connect the AC Adapter to the CONSULT PC.
CAUTION: Be sure to connect the AC Adapter. If the CONSULT PC battery voltage drops during
reprogramming, the process will be interrupted and the ECM may be damaged.

3. Have the GR8 Multitasking Battery Diagnostic Station (battery tester/charger) available and ready to use.
•

Do not connect the battery tester/charger at this time. If needed, it will be connected later in this
procedure.

4. Turn ON the CONSULT PC, open ASIST, and then open C-III plus.
5. Turn the ignition ON.
6. Wait for the VI to be recognized / connected.
•

Serial number will display when VI is recognized / connected.

If there is a match. Continue with the reprogramming procedure.

•

If there is not a match, reprogramming is not needed. Close C-III plus and disconnect from the
vehicle.

NOTE: Continue with this Service Procedure (ECM Reprogramming) only if a P/N match was found in
Table A on the previous page.

21. Take the vehicle for a 10 minute drive in order to meet the
following conditions:
•

Li-ion battery charging status: 50% or more

•

Engine coolant temperature: 70 – 100° C (158 – 212° F)

•

12V battery voltage: More than 12.9 V (At idle)

•

Transmission: Warmed-up

NOTE: After reprogramming is complete you will be required to perform Idle Air Volume Learn (IAVL)
before CONSULT will give the final reprogramming confirmation report. The above conditions are required
for the IAVL to complete.

22. Connect and set up the GR8 Multitasking Battery
Diagnostic Station (battery tester/charger) for the
12V battery.
•

For convenience, the GR-8 can be
connected to the “jump-start” points under
the hood.

•

Set unit in test mode.
(Battery charging begins when Test Mode
and Advance Test Mode are complete.)

•

Select LIMIT VOLTAGE, and set MIN
VOLTAGE to 12.40 volts.

CAUTION : DO NOT use a standard battery charger for Hybrid vehicles. Make sure the battery voltage
stays between 12.0V and 15.5V during reprogramming. If the battery voltage goes out of this range
during reprogramming, the ECM may be damaged.

23. Make sure the ignition is set to ON engine OFF (not ready).

Engine must not start or run during ECM
reprogramming.

•

Make sure the dash warning lights are ON and the
“ready to drive” indicator light is OFF (not
illuminated).

24. IMPORTANT: Turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads such as exterior lights, interior lights, HVAC, blower,
rear defogger, audio, NAVI, seat heater, steering wheel heater, etc.

25. Observe the following cautions:

CAUTION:
•

Turn off all cell phones and external Bluetooth devices within range of the CONSULT PC.

•

Do not touch C-III plus during reprogramming.

•

Do not disconnect the AC adaptor during reprogramming.

•

Do not disconnect the “plus” VI’s diagnostic cables during reprogramming.

•

Do not touch the power / ignition switch during reprogramming.

•

Do not touch any electrical switch during reprogramming.
